Obsidian: Want to know more about Aliens RPG? Ask again in 2011

aliensvspred1b

Don’t get the wrong idea, now. The Aliens RPG is still very dead, but if you’d like to sift through its grizzly remains, mark your calendars for February 2011.

“It’s a tough thing for us, because it means we’re all still under a non-disclosure agreement, at least for awhile,” Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquardt told Joystiq, speaking of the legalities behind game cancellations. “We have our ideas, but they’re purely opinions and they could be absolutely wrong. The NDA was two years past termination, so talk to us in February 2011.”

Urquardt did, however, reveal that Obsidian is applying the engine it developed for Aliens to its unannounced project. The game probably won’t be an RPG where creepy crawly aliens burst from people’s chests, but at least it’s something, right?

Obsidian confirms cancelation of Aliens RPG

aliensa

Obsidian has confirmed that its Aliens RPG slated to be published by Sega is dead.

The official forums had this message posted:

“Rumors have circled around a bit regarding the fate of the Aliens role playing game that Obsidian and SEGA had been working on.

Unfortunately, it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development. We’re going to keep this forum up for another week for archival purposes and to allow you guys to finish up any open threads, and then we will shut it down since it is no longer a product that is in development.”

Alpha Protocol, New Vegas and an unannounced title are still in the works from Obsidian, so that’s good we reckon.

Obsidian CEO says company is “doing just fine” despite lay-off rumors

alphaprotocol

Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart has told Big Download, “We are doing just fine and do not have to shut down operations,” in response to lay-off rumors earlier this week.

After Sega suspended the firm’s Aliens RPG indefinitely, it was reported that over 20 staff members had been made redundant at Obsidian.

The rumor has still not been addressed on either side, but Urquhart did say that his company is hard at work on the development of Alpha Protocol and two other properties.

Alpha Protocol is to be published by Sega sometime this year, and it’s rumored that Obsidian is working on a third expansion for Neverwinter Nights 2.

Rumor: Obsidian lays-off as Aliens RPG is canned [Update]

aliens

Update: Gamespot’s been told work’s been “indefinitely suspended” on the game.

Rumor has it that Sega’s canceled Obsidian’s upcoming Aliens RPG, resulting in 20 employees being laid off.

This all comes on the heels of Sega’s announcement yesterday of a new Rebellion-developed Alien vs Predator for 2010.

The title’s confirmation would mean “strategically updated” release planning for Sega’s other Aliens games, said the firm. Look as though that may have meant “off the map entirely,” at least for the Obsidian project.

We’ve mailed Sega and left phone messages so hopefully someone over there can confirm or deny this soon.
