Manic Miner creator has a new game in the works
Matthew Smith, famed designer of Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy, is back in the business after an almost uninterrupted three decade vacation. PCGamesN reports Smith is working with Elite Systems to produce a new game. Elite, which like Smith has been in the games business since the mid-80′s, has been re-releasing many of the designers ZX Spectrum classics on mobile in recent years, so we can probably expect something similar.

Zynga’s first real-money gambling apps launch this week
ZyngaPlusPoker and ZyngaPlusCasino will launch in the UK on April 3. GamesIndustry reports the two apps, the first of Zynga’s real-money gambling efforts, will be available for web and as downloadable clients, with Facebook and mobile versions also touted. Zynga is also pushing for real-money gambling games in the US, and the move is sort of the great white hope for the social and casual publisher since its Facebook revenue began drying up.

Google, Apple key to paid app success, says Critter Crunch dev
In a GDC session, as reported by Edge, Nathan Vella of Capybara Games said that earning a featured spot on Apple or Google’s app stores is the best way to promote a premium mobile game. He mentioned a number of other factors like not launching in the same week as big titles, figuring out what makes the game special and designing the game before deciding how to monetise it, but said leveraging fan interest to help get platform holders’ interest is vital. “Both of their companies have extremely ‘ear to the ground’ editorial teams and if you can make a splash, they will notice,” he said.

Jetpack Joyride hits 2 million downloads on PlayStation Mobile
Launched last November on Sony’s service and made free a month later, Halfbrick’s Jetpack Joyride has hit the 2-million download mark, according to Joystiq. The game is wildly popular on all platforms; on Google Play it’s been downloaded more than ten million times. This is a good sign for Sony, because it means folks are actually using PlayStation Mobile, which is accessible on the PS Vita and Sony phones.

Warner Bros. Interactive opens new free-to-play mobile, browser based studio
Warner Bros. Interactive has announced the formation of a new San Francisco studio which will developer free-to-play mobile and browser games. It will be headed up by the firm’s current SVP of digital, Greg Ballard. The studio will also be in charge of publishing the titles as well as other titles made by Warner’s studios.
