Rumor: Netflix currently in “testing stages” and coming “very shortly” to Wii

Streaming media analyst Dan Rayburn has said that a source of his “involved in the project” told him that Nintendo is in the “testing stages” with Netflix.
The source even went so far as to say the service will arrive on the console “very shortly”.
“What I’m hearing is that Nintendo originally planned to bring the Netflix service to the Wii before the end of this year,” he wrote, “which still might take place, but that Nintendo is also considering holding off on the Netflix service until they release their next generation Wii HD unit in early 2010.”
Rayburn also claims to have images of the service, but declined to share the shots with Business Insider, because he didn’t want it to come back to haunt his source.
Michael Pachter said yesterday that Netflix on Wii will be announced “in the next 12 months”.

Netflix promises no disc shortages for PS3 streaming service

Netflix has confirmed that all PS3 users who request a disc for the streaming service will get one come Novemeber.
Speaking with Joystiq, Netflix vice president Steve Swasey said that there will be no disc shortages, as it as “produced enough discs” with distribution centers currently hoarding units until the ship date.
While the company is still working out distribution details, customers will receive the red envelope as fast as it normally takes for a Netflix rental to hit their doorstep.
Also, since there isn’t a “VIP list or special circumstance list”, everyone should get it around the same time.
Netflix also confirmed that PS3 service will be similar to the Xbox 360 service, which outputs 720p and stereo sound.

Disc-free integrated Netflix coming to PS3 next year

Netflix has told Joystiq that a disc-free version of the service will arrive in the form of an update sometime next year.
Until then, users will have to pop in the Netflix disc to access the service until it becomes available.
“Netflix members and PS3 owners have really wanted a way to instantly watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system,” a representative told the site. “The instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let them do this.
“Late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network.”
To clarify, the disc-based service has nothing to do with Microsoft.
“The Netflix agreement with Sony for PS3 is consistent with the terms of our partnership with Microsoft for Xbox 360,” the rep added. “Our goal is to give members the opportunity to instantly watch movies streamed from Netflix via the widest variety of Netflix ready devices.
“All of our partners are aware of our goal.”
