Rumor: Netflix currently in “testing stages” and coming “very shortly” to Wii

netflix

Streaming media analyst Dan Rayburn has said that a source of his “involved in the project” told him that Nintendo is in the “testing stages” with Netflix.

The source even went so far as to say the service will arrive on the console “very shortly”.

“What I’m hearing is that Nintendo originally planned to bring the Netflix service to the Wii before the end of this year,” he wrote, “which still might take place, but that Nintendo is also considering holding off on the Netflix service until they release their next generation Wii HD unit in early 2010.”

Rayburn also claims to have images of the service, but declined to share the shots with Business Insider, because he didn’t want it to come back to haunt his source.

Michael Pachter said yesterday that Netflix on Wii will be announced “in the next 12 months”.

Netflix promises no disc shortages for PS3 streaming service

netflix

Netflix has confirmed that all PS3 users who request a disc for the streaming service will get one come Novemeber.

Speaking with Joystiq, Netflix vice president Steve Swasey said that there will be no disc shortages, as it as “produced enough discs” with distribution centers currently hoarding units until the ship date.

While the company is still working out distribution details, customers will receive the red envelope as fast as it normally takes for a Netflix rental to hit their doorstep.

Also, since there isn’t a “VIP list or special circumstance list”, everyone should get it around the same time.

Netflix also confirmed that PS3 service will be similar to the Xbox 360 service, which outputs 720p and stereo sound.

Disc-free integrated Netflix coming to PS3 next year

netflix

Netflix has told Joystiq that a disc-free version of the service will arrive in the form of an update sometime next year.

Until then, users will have to pop in the Netflix disc to access the service until it becomes available.

“Netflix members and PS3 owners have really wanted a way to instantly watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system,” a representative told the site. “The instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let them do this.

“Late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network.”

To clarify, the disc-based service has nothing to do with Microsoft.

“The Netflix agreement with Sony for PS3 is consistent with the terms of our partnership with Microsoft for Xbox 360,” the rep added. “Our goal is to give members the opportunity to instantly watch movies streamed from Netflix via the widest variety of Netflix ready devices.

“All of our partners are aware of our goal.”

Netflix for Wii within a year, says Pachter

netflix

Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter’s claimed that the just-announced PS3 Netflix deal has had to be tweaked to ensure it’s within terms of the firm’s exclusivity deal with Microsoft, and that a similar Wii deal isn’t far behind.

“We anticipate that a similar arrangement will be announced for the Wii in the next 12 months”, he said.

The analyst added: “We believe that the exclusive arrangement limits Netflix’s ability to appear on the ‘dashboard’ for the PS3 or the Wii, but because both devices have open architecture Internet browsers built-in, the solution proposed for the PS3 would likely not violate the terms of Microsoft’s exclusivity.”

Official – Netflix coming to PS3 next month [Update]

netflix

Update: PR is after the break.

Original Story: It’s official: PS3 owners in the US will get Netflix, starting from next month.

Users of the system will be able to use the service from the PSN at no additional cost. You will need a streaming Blu-ray though to use it, but the rental company will send that out to you for free.

“The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows,” said SCEA CEO, Jack Tretton.

“Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all.”

It was a service that was exclusive to the Xbox 360 from last year, after the release of the NXE.

Netflix: Xbox-exclusive today, “on all consoles” tomorrow

netflix

After being wooed by Microsoft early in the game, it appears that Netflix now wants to spread the love. Speaking with Reuters, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings outlined his plan to boldly stream movies where no other service has streamed before.

“Eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs. So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts. Currently our Xbox deal is exclusive and we haven’t characterized it more than that,” he said.

Expect to see Netflix on everything short of the Game Boy Color the second that exclusivity deal runs out.

Netflix confirmed as 360 exclusive [Update]

netflix

Oh, daddy. Microsoft’s confirmed the reason Netflix has been so hesitant to lay its hat on PS3 and Wii: it’s got an exclusive deal in place with the US online movie provider.

According to the update notes released as part of today’s 360 summer dashboard update, the platform holder stated the following:

Netflix Partnership

This exclusive partnership offers you the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the television via Xbox 360. Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience, available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers, at no additional cost.

And the quarterback is toast. Thanks, Engadget.

Update – The passage above is actually contained in the original Netflix-360 press release. From July 2008. Thanks, Kingsgoon.

Microsoft discusses upcoming Netflix changes on XBL

netflix360

When Netflix gets updated on Xbox Live August 11, users will have to add new movies to the queue via their PC and do it manually.

Granted, the change will happen momentarily on the dashboard, but apparently users will only be able to choose the 50 most recent titles added to a each category. If they want something more arcane or less popular, of to the PC they will have to go.

Ben Smith, director of program management for Xbox Live, lead the team that designed the new Netflix update and says the “Netflix lite” approach was created to give a more “video rental store” experience to customers.

“I think when people come to Xbox they’re not really looking so much for functional, they really want to have fun, they want to be wowed,” he told MTV Multiplayer. “If we find out that people really think it’s hard and they really want to find all movies that begin with “B” or something like that, we’ll definitely go down that path. With Marketplace we did that…there was kind of a compromise.”

Thanks, Joystiq.

Sony confirms Netflix partnership… for Bravias

ps31

Sony’s announced a deal to bring Netflix to internet-enabled Bravia TVs, meaning owners of the sets will have access to the service’s thousands of movies out of the box.

Which is great. But there’s no mention of PS3 in the confirmation at all. A little odd, seeing as it’s the most obvious deal in the history of mankind.

Does MS have a console exclusive on the movie outlet? We should probably ask the question.

Bravias get Netflix in the US this autumn.

Rumour: Wii Netflix survey drops $10 charge

netflix

Remember that survey about Netflix for Wii? Well, there’s been another one. And this time its dropped the notion of a $10 set-up fee.

The initial survey mooted the idea of a “Netflix Instant Streaming Disc” for $10. This time it noted the disc would be “available for free.”

Could be pie dans le sky, obviously. More on Joystiq.
