Michael Jackson died in LA last night, spawning one of the greatest Twitter-mong moments ever, as 10 million people all said, “Is Michael Jackson dead?” within three minutes of each other in one place on the internet. Good times.

Poor old Michael. The most important aspect of his death, though, is obviously how the music genius and sensational odd-ball affected videogames. Luckily, the Americans already have you covered.

IGN’s totted up Jackson’s game appearances in this piece, while 1UP’s has taken a “look back” at his “influence” on games as a whole.

MTV and GameDaily both have “retrospectives”. And very awesome they are, too.

You just know all the specialist car sites this morning are going, “Fuck. What about a list of the best Michael Jackson driving tracks?” All the specialist cooking sites will have their Michael Jackson recipe compendiums up by lunchtime.

Mr Jackson, we’re sorry you’re dead. Your music was amazing. We salute you.

LA show E for All is no more, according to an IDG statement published by VE3D.

Speaking to videogaming247 at a Fallout 3 demo in London this morning, Bethesda marketing head Peter Hines has confirmed the unthinkable: if you don’t look after Dogmeat the dog, don’t go crying to mother when he doesn’t come back for bath time.

What happens if he dies?

“Dead,” said Hines.

Is there another dog?

“Nope. One dog. Be careful.”

Dogmeat can be sent to find ammo, food, stimpacks, and so on, but if you don’t think about what you’re doing with him he’s not going to last very long, from the sound of it.

“So obviously you have to be careful about where you send him foraging for stuff,” said Hines. “If you’re attacking a Raider camp, or something, and you’re running low on ammo and you say, ‘Go find me ammo,’ and he goes running through a bunch of Raiders, they can shoot and kill him while he tries to do what you told him. So you’ve got to be smart about where you send him off.”

Luckily, our canine friend isn’t necessary to the plot.

“It’s an homage to the original game to have a memorable dog that you can have with you, and it’s a way to give you a companion.”

Fallout 3 looks amazing, whether your dog’s dead or not. It’s coming out for PC, PS3 and 360 this autumn. We’ll have fuller impressions of this morning’s demo in due course.

Another nail for HD-DVD’s already groaning coffin arrives in news that major UK high street retailer Woolworths has dropped the format following slow Christmas sales. Blu-ray will be the only HD disc format now stocked in the store.

“Sales figures clearly show that the market is moving towards one format of high definition DVD,” said Woolworths DVD buyer Steven McGunigel. “The main reason is the success of Sony’s PlayStation 3 machine. Because it plays Blu-Ray discs, there are over three quarters of a million homes in the UK that can view the new high definition format. There is nowhere near that number of HD-DVD players around. Switching to Blu-Ray only will provide one clear offer to customers in the format they want to watch high definition movies in.”
