Fortnite crafting | How to collect parts and craft weapons

Fortnite: Chapter 2 Season 6, in keeping with its Primal theme, has introduced a series of survival mechanics. Alongside the usual Battle Royale gameplay, you'll now be collecting mechanical parts and animal bones in order to craft your own weapons and items.

How to collect crafting materials in Fortnite: Chapter 2 Season 6

There are two major new types of crafting material in Season 6: mechanical parts and animal bones.

Generally speaking, it's easiest to find mechanical parts in built-up areas of the map where there are lots of buildings and cars around. Animals, meanwhile, generally prefer more open and wild regions of the map.

In addition, you'll be using other items — such as weapons, explosives, or meat — to craft special recipes.

How to collect mechanical parts

The main sources of mechanical parts in Fortnite are vehicles. Use your hammer to destroy cars, trucks, tractors, etc. and they'll drop the crafting parts you need.

In my experience, each vehicle will usually drop a maximum of one mechanical part. It might drop before you fully destroy the vehicle, at which point you might as well move on unless you want the building parts too.

If you do fully destroy a vehicle, as ever just be aware that they do tend to explode, set on fire, and/or shoot up in the air and land on you in protest. So just keep an eye out for that.

Mechanical parts are mainly used to craft Mechanical weapons.

How to collect animal bones

Regrettably if you're an animal lover, this one is what it sounds like. You'll need to kill the wild animals that can now be found roaming the map and collect the bones that they drop. Currently your choices are wolves, boars, chickens, and frogs.

(Though as you'll see, frogs drop a slightly different resource — but still one that's useful for crafting.)

A few words of advice when it comes to hunting animals. First: your default hammer won't do much good against any of them. Chickens and frogs simply move too fast to land a hit on most of the time, and even when you do, the reduction to their HP is tiny. Meanwhile wolves and boars, while slower, will be actively trying to attack you, and getting in close with a melee weapon is more risky than it is rewarding.

Secondly, even the smaller, non-aggressive creatures have surprisingly large health bars. So pick up a weapon or two before you go hunting and be prepared to shoot even a humble chicken three or four times.

How to craft weapons in Fortnite: Chapter 2 Season 6

In order to craft a Primal or Mechanical weapon, you'll need to find a Makeshift version of that weapon to act as a base.

Makeshift weapons are basically the same ones you've always been able to pick up in various locations around Fortnite's map. But now the revolver, rifle, shotgun, submachine gun, and bow all have craftable upgrades.

Go into your Inventory and you'll notice a new Crafting tab. Go into it and you'll see everything you can currently craft using the items you have access to.

Any items in your Inventory that can't be upgraded are greyed out, and there's a helpful hammer icon at the top of every inventory item which can be upgraded with parts you currently have on hand.

Each item's entry in the crafting tab gives you a preview of what its stats will be after you craft the upgrade.

Upgrading any makeshift weapon with four mechanical parts will give you the classic version of that weapon. It's more or less the weapon that you're used to in Fortnite, but with improved stats compared to its makeshift base.

Upgrading a makeshift weapon with four animal bones creates that weapon's Primal variant. They are less precise than classic weapons, but deal a lot of extra damage. Plus they look cool as hell.

Upgrading your weapons even further

Crafting the classic or Primal version of a weapon doesn't have to be the end of the road. Many of these weapons have an extra level of upgrade available to craft.

Taking any classic weapon that's been upgraded with mechanical parts and combining it with two shockwave grenades creates a mechanical shockwave variant on that weapon.

Suitably for a season that features a wilderness theme and a prominent Tomb Raider tie-in, there's a heavy focus on cool bow upgrades. In addition to the mechanical shockwave bow mentioned above, you can combine a mechanically upgraded bow with six common grenades, making the mechanical explosive bow.

Finally, there are two unique upgrades to the Primal Bow:

• Combined with one stink sac (dropped by frogs when you kill them instead of meat or bones) or three stink fish (a new type of fish introduced in Season 6), the Primal Bow becomes a Primal Stink Bow.
• Combined with a firefly jar or a gas canister, the Primal Bow becomes a Primal Flame Bow.
