Willits: Rage has “an economy,” “recipes”

rage

Deserty epic Rage is to have money, weird boomerang things and “recipes” used for creating items, id boss Tim Willit’s told NowGamer.

“Rage… has an economy where you are allowed to choose how you spend your money earned through combat and racing,” said the exec.

“You might decide you love the wingstick (a boomerang-cum-shuriken weapon) and stock up on them, or you may feel inclined to purchase parts to build more sentry bots or to keep your armour upgraded and repaired.”

Recipes? All true.

“We’re not quite ready to divulge every engineering item, but the system is one of the things we are most excited about,” Willits added when asked about the game’s custom weaponry system.

“Through your relationships with characters in the game you earn recipes over time. Then you buy, loot, or receive as rewards the different ingredients that each recipe calls for.”

Rage, id’s first original IP sionce Quake, releases next year via EA.

id will show “new stuff” at E3 this year

toddh

id Software’s Todd Hollenshead had told Gamespot that the firm will show off “new stuff” at E3 this year.

“I expect that we’ll have some new stuff at E3 that we haven’t announced yet, along with Wolfenstein and other known projects,” said Hollenshead.

It’s unknown whether or not id will demo Rage and its next Doom game.

“I’ll leave that as a tease,” Hollenshead added.

Wolfenstein is expected sometime this summer for PC, 360 and PS3.

Wolfenstein – 15 shots of mental Nazis

wolfensteina5

Nazis are brilliant. Yes, we’re aware there’s a pretty solid case for them not being that brilliant, but you know what we mean. These Gamespot screens of mad glowy Nazis are therefore doubly great, especially given the game itself is shaping up so well.

Get out impressions here.

Doom 4 “three times” Rage visual quality

Although id didn’t show Doom 4 at QuakeCon today, the company did say that the shooter will be a graphical monster, and significantly more visually impressive than EA’s Rage.

Doom will “not be another four-year development period”, said tech lead John Carmack, but will have “three times the graphics richness” because it runs at 30 frames-per-second, rather than 60, which Rage targets.

“You can expect the Doom game to look like it’s developed with the next-generation graphics technology,” said Carmack.

No release date as yet. More on Eurogamer.

id’s Carmack talks up Doom 4 – better than Rage

In an interview with MaximumPC, id Software co-founder and software engineer John Carmack says that the id 5 technology used in Rage has been given such an overhaul that Doom 4 will appear to be an entirely different new game engine all together.

“It’s going to look like a totally new game engine on there, even though it’s going to be built on the four years of effort that we spent developing this generation of technology.”

He goes on to say the Doom 4 will run at 30fps, which is why they can cram so much detail in.

Quake Live: You can’t turn the ads off

Speaking to IGN, id’s John Carmack has confirmed that you won’t be able to switch the in-game ads off in upcoming free-to-play shooter, Quake Live.

“No, there’s no current plan for that,” he said. “Not to say it couldn’t happen depending on how the market bears out on it. Actually, turning the ads off right now would make the whole thing look worse. They really are integrated in such a way that they’re not obtrusive, you’re not waiting for any of the ads. It’s not like stuff on website where it’s like ‘watch this ad’ or subscribe or whatever like that where you’re actively frustrated with it.”

We’ve been hearing very good things about the beta, so stay tuned. Ads or not.

Rage ambitions forced id to get serious about AI, says Hooper

id’s Matt Hooper said at GDC Paris yesterday that the design ambitions for post-apolcalyptic action title Rage have forced the company to take on an AI designer as well as an AI programmer.

“Our gameplay goals for Rage are so much more than we’ve ever had before, that if you don’t have an AI designer working with an AI programmer, then you’re just going to be in bad shape,” he said. “So we’ve been forced to do that, just by the breadth of our design goals.”

id may go back to ESA says, Hollenshead

Speaking to the Washington Post, id boss Todd Hollenshead said that the firm’s widely reported decision to leave the ESA is unlikely to be a permanent one.

“Our departure from ESA is probably temporary and was not political,” he said.

“It was a question of other priorities this year that we wanted to focus on.”

id quit the ESA in May, following similar moves from Activision, LucasArts and Vivendi.

PC gamers shifting to consoles – id

According to this, id biz dev man Steve Nix said the company is seeing a definite migration of gamers from PC to console.

“I know that I have friends who are considered core gamers, who years ago were just keyboard and mouse guys – now, when a game ships on all platforms, they buy the console version, even though the PC version is sitting there and they have a PC that would run it perfectly well. It’s just their preference,” he said.

Greg Stone, who has been working on Quake Wars at Nerve Software, agreed: “For me, I’m exactly what he’s describing – I’m a guy that used to play on PCs, and now I’m totally console. It’s so much money to keep up with the bleeding edge of technology on the PC, and it really just is easier to take a console and say, well, this is good enough. I think that’s the way it is for me, and for a lot of people at this point in time.”

Dubbed Quake Live, the game will offer friends lists and communication, stats tracking, matchmaking, sponsored events and tournaments.

Like, wow.
