Elite: Dangerous VR trailer reminds us it supports Oculus Rift

Elite: Dangerous still supports Oculus Rift. Just so you know.

Elite: Dangerous VR trailer reminds us it supports Oculus Rift

Elite: Dangerous has a strange relationship with virtual reality. Frontier Developments was one of the earliest crowdfunding backers of Oculus Rift, and offered Rift dev kit support for ages - but then suddenly announced it would drop Oculus support in favour of SteamVR.

Later, Frontier confirmed ongoing support for the consumer version of Oculus Rift, saying it just hadn't been able to talk about it until Oculus made an announcement. Even though Elite: Dangerous was already playable on dev kit models.

Another delightful tangle caused by the weirdness that is tightly-locked video game PR. At this stage you may be forgiven for having no idea whether Elite: Dangerous is compatible with Oculus Rift or not, and Oculus seems to be hoping to remedy that by releasing an extended trailer highlighting the feature.

Watch it above. Be reassured. Engage in some way so that whichever marketing or PR person is responsible for this messaging can take the rest of the day off. We all have to do our part.

Oculus Rift is available now, by the way, although stock seems to be extremely limited and orders are backed up. The HTC Vive is also in short supply. It's frustrating for those waiting on their units, but it bodes well for VR's future - especially given how expensive the damn things are. There'll probably be a major run on the cheaper PlayStationVR, which releases in October.
