You can kill every NPC in The Outer Worlds

Obsidian Entertainment has great news for the psychopaths amongst you, with the news that there are no essential NPCs in The Outer Worlds.

The devs demonstrated the lengths to which you can go to kill anyone that takes your fancy during an alpha gameplay demo at PAX East (via MrRedRivers).

The panel featured The Outer Worlds' co-directors, Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, lead designer Charles Staples, and senior narrative director Megan Starks, while Mikey Dowling, Obsidian's director of communications, moderated.

"During the game, if you're on a regular playthrough, you're unlikely to be fighting in [Byzantium], although you can kill everybody and anybody if you want," they said, before strolling out into the town to mow down corporate troopers and civilians alike.

The demo also demonstrated The Outer Worlds' version of Fallout's VATs, called tactical time dilation. We have a more detailed breakdown of The Outer Worlds combat and how it works, so be sure to take a gander if you're interested.

Starks has previously commented on the ability to kill all NPCs in an interview with RPG Site.

"As a designer, I'm always tempted to just have it made so that you can't kill this person or that person!" she replied, when asked if there are any characters or quest-specific NPCs that players aren't allowed to kill.

"But we have a philosophy where we feel like it makes for a better gameplay experience to allow the player to do these sorts of things," she added.

The Outer Worlds is launching later this year on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but if a leaked date on the title's Steam Store page is anything to go by, we may see it release as soon as August 6, 2019.
