Valve Index sold 103,000 units after Half-Life: Alyx announcement - report

Unsurprisingly, we have another metric to prove that Half-Life: Alyx really did boost VR sales.

Market analyst Superdata has revealed in its 2019 VR/AR report that the Valve Index headset has sold 149,000 units during the year. 103,000 of those sales were made in the last three months of the year.

Half-Life: Alyx was announced in November, so there's a strong indication that most of those 103,000 were sold in that period. Indeed, the headset's stock faced shortages in the weeks to follow, which has so far extended into 2020 worldwide.

Superdata's report also reveals that the Index was Q4's best-selling PC VR headset, and would have sold even more had it not been for these stock shortages. Though these numbers are indeed impressive, they are far from chart-topping.

In Q4 alone, PlayStation VR was the top-selling headset with 338,000 units, followed closely by the Oculus Quest with 317,000. Half-Life: Alyx will, of course, be compatible with a wide range of VR headsets, and some have already played it using a few of the most popular options.

Alyx will be released sometime in March.
