Shenmue 3 PC backers unhappy over the game being an Epic Game Store exclusive can ask for a refund.
Shenmue 3 was revealed as an Epic Games Store exclusive during E3 2019. Backers who are displeased with the decision can ask for a refund, according Ys Net.
Alongside refunds, the studio and its publisher Deep Silver, are offering alternative options to a refund.
One is a key for the original distribution method, Steam. There's one caveat: backers will have to wait one year to receive it. This is due to timed-exclusivity with the Epic Games Store.
Backers can also request a physical copy instead of a key; however, the disk will contain the EGS installer and not the actual game data. A Steam key can be requested alongside the physical copy, but again, it will be a year wait.
Alternatively, PC users also have the option to request a PS4 copy of the game instead.
"That we are not able to offer Steam keys for Kickstarter rewards at the time of the game’s release is a great disappointed and inconvenience for those backers who were expecting to receive them," reads the Kickstarter update. "We deeply apologize for the unrest caused by the announcement."
Below is a breakdown of the offers available if you do not wish to request a refund.
Shenmue 3 PC and PS4 options
- PC Physical: Package (Disc) ＋ Epic Games Store Key
- PC Digital: Epic Games Store Key
- Again, you can choose the option to also receive a Steam key which will be available one year later.
- PS4 Physical: Package (Disc)
- PS4 Digital: PSN Voucher Code
Should the above proposal "not be acceptable to backers," said Yes Net, refund requests will be honored. In some cases, depending upon the reward tier and because the in-game content has been "created and implemented," a full refund may not be possible.
A new player survey will go live soon, and in the survey, backers will need to manually select the Steam key option to receive the key. Details concerning the refund request process will also be announced in an upcoming update.
