How to choose the best mobile phone

Choosing a mobile phone can be a bit bewildering due to the massive amount of choice. Don’t sweat it though; what you need to do is to get the big decisions set in your mind before you go shopping. What’s your budget? What operating system do you want to run? What size screen are you after? Once you have those three things in place, buying a new phone becomes a lot easier.

How much should I spend on a phone?

You can spend between £100 and £600 on a phone depending on what you need it for. If you’re after a cheap and cheerful burner, £100 won’t get you anything by Apple, but it will get you an Android or even Windows phone you can throw around your backpack and not worry about scratching its beautiful screen.

Once you get past the £200 – £250 mark you’ll get a phone that can handle every day use – calls, browsing, social media apps, decent photography and some basic work functions. If you want something top of the range from Apple you’ll be paying top whack, but know you have the cutting edge tech in your hands. Get it insured while you’re at it.

Which operating system should I run?

You have the choice of three, so we’ll list the pros and cons of Windows, Apple and Android phones:

Windows

Pros: plenty of cheaper handsets to choose from, compatible with Windows laptops, PCs and apps. Handy for taking work from a laptop or PC on the go.

Cons: not as popular as Android or Apple, so less choice of apps.

Android

Pros: Multiple manufacturers make Android phones, so there’s a massive choice of handsets on the market to suit you. This also means there’s an Android phone to suit pretty much any budget. Google Play store has a huge variety of apps and games to use.

Cons: Android handsets differ from each manufacturer even though they have the same basic functions. Android apps and games usually arrive after appearing on Apple’s iOS store. There is some criticism that Android phones are more vulnerable to security risks.

Apple

Pros: iOS operating system is pretty much universal across all Apple iPhone handsets. Easiest system to use. Huge selection of apps, games and entertainment options, all vetted by Apple before release.

Cons: All iPhones are expensive. No Micro SD card slot, so make sure you choose you handset wisely as you can’t upgrade. Some proprietary apps such as iTunes can’t really be avoided and so can feel like they’re forced on the user.

What size phone should I buy?

You might be able to find a bargain online, but only holding a phone in your hand to feel the weight and size of it will truly give you an indication of comfortable use and carrying. Phones with a screen of over 5.5 inches will look great and ideal for entertainment, but can be awkward to carry in your pocket. Sometimes bigger is not always better. Shop around and get hands-on before making your decision.
