gamescom 2011 to feature 550 exhibitors
It’s gut check time. Koelnmesse’s announced this morning that next week’s gamescom will feature 550 exhibitors from 40 countries. The numbers are an increase of last year, with the number of countries going up by seven, with the exhibitor figures being a ten percent increase on last year. The show’s project manager Tim Endres said he was “delighted with this result above all for our visitors from Germany, Europe and the world.”
gamescom takes place from August 17 – the first day being a media-only day – until August 21. Read our preview of the show here. Thanks, MCV.

Cage: Heavy Rain’s “not really a videogame anymore”

Are you drunk on David Cage yet? Of course not! You need one more shot of his strongest words, and we’re here to provide that for you.
Speaking at GamesCom, Cage told VG247 that Heavy Rain’s gone beyond the limits of what you’d typically call a “videogame.”
“[It's] something that is not really a videogame anymore. It’s fully interactive; I’m not talking about that. But in the matter of format, objectives, and the way it works, it’s not really a videogame anymore,” he said.
“So all the rules that have been defined by this industry to promote games, like trade shows and demos, you have to ask yourself if it’s really the type of thing worth doing.”
Well, that’s enough Cage for us. We’re off to lose our last three day’s worth of lunches behind a dumpster now. But we’re lightweights. You, though — you want more. We can see the look in your eyes, the fire. Go read the rest of the interview. Do what we couldn’t.

Rumor: GamesCom document reveals new PS3 SKU

PlayStation LifeStyle‘s gotten its hands on some very juicy — sumptuous, even — gossip, in the form of an alleged Sony GamesCom document. This telling piece of intel reveals, among other things, a new PS3 SKU, which is apparently set to be announced during Sony’s GameCom presser.
Click through the link to see the full document for yourself. Honestly, though, the info looks a bit dodgy to us, so we’re taking this one with a grain of salt. Plus, it’s a document. We could whip up a document right now that says Sony’s announcing the PS4 tomorrow, with a new Ridge Racer and an even more historically accurate Genji game set on the moon.
We’ve asked Sony for comment, so hopefully we’ll hear back on this soon.

Frank Sliwka takes helm at gamescom dev conference
Frank Sliwka, the boss of Leipzig’s GCDC up to this year, will head up the gamescom developer conference in Cologne as of 2009, Koelnmesse’s confirmed.
“We are delighted to be working with Frank Sliwka and Global Games Media. Their choice of Cologne and their confidence in the new trade fair location show us that we are on the right track and can establish gamescom as Europe’s trade fair and event highlight in a very short space of time”, said Oliver Kuhrt, Koelnmesse MD.
Press release after the link.

Leipzig plans Games Convention for 2009
Games Convention owner Leipziger Messe has confirmed today that the show is still scheduled to happen in Leipzig in 2009. The news comes in the wake of an joint announcement from the BIU [Germany's answer to ELSPA or ESA - Ed] and Koelnmesse that a new event, GAMESCom, is to be held in Cologne in September next year.
It had been thought that the Games Convention IP may have been licensed to the new showground for a sizeable sum, but in essence the BIU hung Leipziger Messe out to dry, dragging Germany’s main show to a new location and refusing to take any tie of the Games Convention brand with it. On the surface, this leaves Leipziger Messe, owner of the biggest games show in the world, with nothing after building up an annual audience of almost 200,000.
Leipziger Messe, obviously, isn’t entirely pleased about the events of the last 24 hours, saying it is disappointed with the decision and today telling Eurogamer.de that it doesn’t believe the BIU understands the concept of Games Convention or its sister trade event GCDC.
Games Convention 2009 is, therefore, on. Whether or not the BIU has just made the biggest booboo in European gaming history remains to be seen.

Confirmed: Games Convention moved to Cologne, renamed GAMESCom
Breaking news from the Leipzig press conference. Leipziger Messe has just confirmed that Games Convention as we know it is no more, and that the event has been moved to Cologne for 2009. Its new name is GAMESCom.
Update: Eurogamer.de’s just published this. The new show is being moved from August to September. Better travel links and 80,000 hotel places in the Cologne area are being mooted as the main reasons for the move. Both the German TV station RTL and the 2009 World Cyber Games are based in Cologne. The organisers have said the new show will work closely with both.
