Wargaming to donate funds to open-source foundations

World of Tanks publisher has elected to return some of its proceeds to a number of open-source foundations which underpin its phenomenal success.

The company will provide an unspecified amount of funding directly to Linux Software, Django Software and Wikimedia.

"Wargaming relies heavily on a number of different open-source technologies to help us create our legendary MMO universe, whether it’s using Linux to power our servers, Django to build our web project frameworks or Wikimedia to help us in our research efforts,” Wargaming's Maksim Melnikau said in a statement published on PCGamesN.

"As a company, we’d like to say thank you to all the developers, testers and users who’ve helped create these awesome tools and that we’re extremely honored to hopefully help them continue their great work moving into the future."

Although many core gamers turn up their noses at Wargaming's free-to-play offerings, World of Tanks, World of Warplanes and World of Warships are incredibly popular and fans are vocal in their praise for the MMOs and the company's support of them. Wargaming will celebrate its 15th anniversary this year, is regularly involved in charitable endeavours, and swooped in to purchase Gas Powered Gaming before it went under.
