Mortal Kombat 11 skins will cost $6,440 if you buy every single one - Update

Mortal Kombat 11’s community manager has stressed that the game was “never designed to encourage in-game purchases," and a currency fix is on the way alongside updates to Tower of Time and Krypts.

According to NetherRealm, once the patch is deployed this week, currency will be awarded far more often, and in greater numbers.

Once live, players will be awarded 500,000 Koins, 500 hearts, and "other items to give everyone a quick early boost."

NetherRealm Studio’s community manager, Tyler Lansdown, said the game was “never designed to encourage in-game purchases,” as the studio's main goal is for players to play the content without being forced to spend real cash.

And when you do buy Krystals to spend in the shop, there's only a "small amount of items" available. Ed Boon added that "the vast majority of skins are not for sale" on the shop anyway.

Lansdown's comments come on the heels of a reddit thread stating if you wanted all skins available in the game, it would cost you $6,440 - a figure Boon said was "complete bullshit."

According to the updated reddit thread, the original poster made a "calculation based on the information available at the time."

In light of the new information, reddit forum moderator Gothamhunter added this note to the original post:

"I don't think OP's intention was to state that you need to spend that much money to buy everything, but that if you did, it's how much it would cost.

"Yes, we realize now that you cannot buy everything, but those numbers still are not clear as we have no method of determining what is store or play through exclusive; Ed's response is pure conjecture at this point unless we know the numbers to back it up.

"Would it still cost $4000? $400? We don't know. I have reached out to Ed to see if he would like to comment on the issue here in the sub."

Whether the OP's math was correct or not, always remember: when cosmetics are made available through microtransactions, they are always an optional purchase. You don't have to buy them. But don't listen to us: we're obsessed with collecting every single mount in a certain game we play even if it means spending real money.

The original story follows.

Plan on smashing buttons until your fingers bleed if you want all of the available skins in Mortal Kombat 11 without paying real money.

Mortal Kombat 11 hit consoles and PC this week, and there are plenty of different skins you can use to change the looks of your favorite fighter.

However, it will cost you plenty if you want to acquire every skin available in the game: there are 23 characters presently, and each offer 60 different skins according to someone who did the math.

Over on reddit, user AccomplishedPoet8 crunched some numbers, and according to the math, it will apparently cost you $6,440 in real-money to buy every skin currently available (thanks, PlayStation LifeStyle).

Four of the skins can be unlocked by playing through the character tutorials, story and basic towers. That leaves 56 skins to unlock. Skins are unlocked just by playing the game, or they can be seemingly purchased using in-game currency called Time Krystals.

Time Krystals can also be earned through gameplay, but seem to amass slowly. If you are the impatient sort, or just really want a particular skin, you can purchase 500 Time Krystals through the in-game store for $5 which is what each skin runs on average.

But, you still may not get the skin you want as they appear on a rotational basis. Every six to eight hours a new set of five skins will become available on the store. Supposedly, once they leave the store, well, prepare yourself for a grindfest.

As AccomplishedPoet8 notes, his math doesn't take into account fatalities, brutalities, gear or single use consumables due to the drop rate being unknown. It also doesn't take into account DLC character skins.

He goes on to say he earned 760 Time Krystals after playing the game four hours. If he wanted to unlock every game skin through gameplay alone, it would take 3,390 hours of playtime and cost 644,000 Time Krystals.

In comparison, throwing $40 at the Mortal Kombat X in-game store would net you DLC characters, skins, brutalities, and the easy fatalities pack.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available for PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One. If you're just getting started, here's a list of every finishing move and all fatality inputs.
