Wolfenstein: Youngblood is bigger than previous games, but the budget price reflects shorter development time

MachineGames says Wolfenstein: Youngblood is much more content rich than previous games, yet it’s releasing at a much cheaper price point. During an interview at E3, I asked why that was the case.

“We're releasing this for, if you buy the deluxe edition, it's for $40, and then you also get the buddy pass, so a friend of yours can play for free,” MachineGames managing director Jerk Gustafsson told me. “So it's very good value for money, absolutely.”

Youngblood features a shorter storyline, but it makes up for it in things to do. There are more missions and it’s more freeform thanks to a development partnership with level design masters Arkane Studios. You can also go back and replay and revisit areas.

“I would say that the main reason for [the cheaper price] is that development time's a bit shorter, we are using the technology from New Colossus,” Gustafsson explained. “Of course we have done improvements to the technology but it is the technology of New Colossus, and it is a spin-off. But with that said, the gameplay time is greater so there's a lot of value for money in there.”

Development on Youngblood was completed in 18 months and so the price reflects that. It seems like we’ll get another full Wolfenstein sequel at some point and it might even feature Mecha Hitler.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood releases on July 29.
