Rumour – Activision working on sub model for Black Ops MP

Activision is working on a subscription model for the multiplayer of Call of Duty: Black Ops, according to an MCV report.
The report states an announcement will come next month, most likely coinciding with the full multiplayer reveal of the game on September 1 in LA.
That’s despite Treyarch community boss Josh Olin debunking any speculation of a subscription model for its multiplayer last month alongside comms boss for Infinity Ward, Rob Bowling.
Call of Duty: Black Ops releases on November 9 for PS3, 360, PC, Wii and DS.

I’d rather believe the debunk then a rumour…

Coincidence that it came hot off the heels of the MP reveal trailer? Hell no! This is taking advantage of the hype machine.
Loads of little kids have already drooled and had orgasms to the video. they’ll almost certainly pay anything to get their hands on this title. Sad really. Its simple business and some shrewd Economics if true.

I notice that this ‘rumour’ is actually just more guess work from Pachter. He also reckons Halo Reach, MOH and GTA5 will do the same…

If true, there’s going to be a big backlash. “Here’s the same thing as the last game, except now you have to pay for it”. Oh dear…

@Freek: I agree, to an extent. Activision are banking on the split loyalties of the CoD fanbase (IW and Treyarch) being strong enough for each respectively to make this model work.

I think these rumours will pursue the COD series for quite some time, particularly if it maintains its momentum.

Seems MVC are insinuating that they do have more to go on than just Patcher’s musings, but I still think it’s a stretch to believe they’ll go down this route.
With PSN being free, I can see Activision negotiating their way around it as being a premium experience, but unless it’s massively subsidised by MS, I can’t see gamers who already pay MS a yearly subscription fee being at all thrilled with having to fork out again.
I’ll laugh if it backfires on them and they effectively kill the CoD brand with this manoeuvre. 360 owners should be busy with Reach, and PS3 gamers will be busy with GT5, so CoD may find itself with less mind share this Christmas anyway.

I’m with the skeptics on this one.
I don’t doubt that any publisher would love to have a viable sub-model for all their games, but I fail to see what would make you pay a subscription for a standard game, outside of cloud gaming.

@10, with MW3 now likely to take longer than Activision would have initially projected (what with having to repopulte IW) will they be willing to wait that long?

@11: IW is already back to almost 100 employees (they had just over 100 working on both CoD4 and MW2) so its safe to assume MW3 is already in the early stages of development.

come hell or high water i would still think mw3 will be the fall 2011 CoD.
IW already started it probly before the walkouts and the core template of CoD gameplay has been laid down so well now, nothing much needs to change there.

Sledgehammer = Fall/Christmas 2011 CoD (in my opinion)

@13 You could ruin the franchise by doing that, though. I’d rather have MW3 come out in March or July and not ruin it for the next CoD, than I’d have it come out halfbaked in November and make the entire franchise unviable.
That being said, I’m not sure you’re wrong. The 2 year franchise rule seems pretty strictly enforced.

it could be but i think it would be too long to wait on the hype from mw2…unless Sledgehammer does mw3!! :O

@15 – they could do a guitar hero then! XD
EDIT: it is NOT sledgehammer for 2011

I ain’t even that impressed with the latest teaser, looks way too much like MW2 but i am still giving it a chance, i’ll just wait. However, if they are really gonna do this….screw that nonsense. Seriously, what the hell. I remember a article not so long ago that was about paying for MP games, and how MS and Sony were never gonna accept that. If this happens…sigh.

yeah…the multiplayer doesn’t even look that good…nothing compared to MW2 graphics, and the guns don’t even look that great…so yeah im not paying for a re-hash of the same game we’ve been getting for three years already just with updated graphics…no one has charged for multiplayer for the 15+ years it’s been in existence, so why start now?… hopefully its just a rumor, but if its not i hope since they are affiliated with blizzard that they listen to the community because there will be a huge uproar about this…ill just pay the rest of the free multiplayer games such as halo reach, medal of honor, bad company 2, not to mention MW2 will still probably be free…but this has got to be BS because MS wouldn’t want people who pay for the XBL service having to pay for multiplayer which is the whole reason XBL came into existence…

Morons keep playing this, so Activision will keep putting another coat of wax on the COD turd.

never ever am i going to pay for a shitty multiplayer.
First developers (and i dont point a particular one) should learn how to provide a bugfree, asshole free, and fun mp without having the customer to mess arround with the above.
noone ever prooved that they can do this, so what am i actualy paying for?
for an mp that is basicaly nothing more than what a mp always was for free? think counterstrike, think quake and unreal.
No Sirs, u have to come up with way more than just the usual mp to get me paying.
MP nowadays is – still – or lets say can be in many ways a frustrating experience. i dont pay for possible (and ofently likely) frustration. I pay for guaranteed fun.

Get your wallates out boys, a new CoD game is coming!!
What is MW2 upto now, with DLC? 105usd for game and DLC sans tax? Is it more?
Games today have really gotten out of hand price wise. Why don’t they just raise the price to 150usd and be done with it. The new EA Sports games with day one DLC are pushing $110usd, more if buy themes and other stuff of course, but just for the full game experience its at $110usd.
And DLC is so bad, that even buying an older game(used or new), has become too expensive. If the game prices drops to 20usd new, but has 30usd of dlc, it puts the whole game price up at 50, near full retail for a brand new game. Lame.
Of course dlc should be optional, but for many games esp online MP ones it really isn’t optional. Esp, if your friends all have those new maps. Or your competition in that online sports league has full players stats via a download code(i mean DLC) and your out of the box players are capped at 80% stats.
Just becareful what you buy, you maybe suprised with what you lose.
