Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U will not have crossplay

Director Masahiro Sakurai has confirmed that 3DS and Wii U owners will not be able to play Super Smash Bros. against each other.

There's quite a good reason, though, as director Masahiro Sakurai explained to Joystiq - each version has unique stages.

Sakurai did reveal how the two version will interact, something that was teased way back when the new brawler was first announced in 2011: players will be able to transfer customised characters between the two versions.

The customisations are still quite mysterious; Sakurai clarified that he did not mean costumes, and that you won't have to grind to enable them.

Sakurai once said that the link between the portable and console was a "key" feature of the game, so expect more information on the subject soon.

The fighter is due in 2014. It's taken quite a while, thanks to a slow start and Sakurai's injury.
