Shovel Knight sales top 700K, physical release inbound

Retro platformer Shovel Knight is on its way to retail.

Shovel Knight backers and fans have vocally demanded a physical release for the old school title, which so perfectly captures the feel of a bygone era that you can't help but want all the accoutrements of the past - an instruction manual, for example - to go with it.

Yacht Club has heard your pleas, and has elected to self-publish the physical release of Shovel Knight. The $20 package is coming to 3DS, PS4, Wii U and Xbox One on October 13 in North America and October 16 in Europe. A PC release is also inbound, but for Europe only. Pre-orders are open now through major retailers, and Yacht Club has asked fans to help spread the word by ordering through the retailer of their choice; distribution is being handled by U&I Entertainment, if that helps.

The physical release includes a "lavish instruction booklet similar to the Kickstarter reward", the original Shovel Knight campaign as well as upcoming expansion Plague of Shadows, and a 50 level Challenge Mode. Like the digital game, all future content updates will be free thanks to the generosity of crowdfunding backers. Here's what Yacht Club has planned at present:

  • Specter Knight’s Campaign – A full campaign starring the shadowy scythe spinner
  • King Knight’s Campaign – A crazy campaign with the gilded goob himself
  • Battle Mode – Duel with up to four players as your favorite heroic or villainous knight (Wii U/PS4/XB1/PC exclusive)
  • Body Swap Mode – Did you ever wish Shovel Knight was a lady, or Shield Knight was a dude? Well, now you’ll be able to change them all around, along with the rest of the cast

In other Shovel Knight news, Plague of Shadows is almost done and will launch before the physical release, and Battle Mode is already in production.
