Oculus Rift: upgraded 1080p HD model shown at E3

Oculus has unveiled the newly-enhanced version of its Rift headsets at E3. The head-mounted device now displays at 1080p, making everything seem that little bit sharper.

The Verge went hands-on (heads-on?) with the new device on the E3 show floor, and confirmed that the upgrade was made possible by switching out the old headset's re-purposed mobile phone screens with newer, sharper models.

Combined, the old screens resulted in 1280×800 resolution, while the new tech delivers a combined resolution of 1920 x 1080, which is 960 x 1080 per eye.

PCGamesN adds that the headset is still at prototype stage with no release date or dev kit launch confirmed. Oculus also showed off virtual cinema tech that makes it look like you're watching movies in a theatre - rows of seats and all. Still no word on that sticky floor simulator though.
