Treyarch: Balancing Black Ops was a challenge

blackops

Treyarch has said balancing Black Ops has been a bit of a challenge for it, compared to the studio’s other Call of Duty titles.

Speaking with CVG, community manager Josh Olin said balancing difficulties arose after Tryarch implemented COD Points and more powerful weapons.

“It has been a much more difficult game to balance but the team really stepped up to the plate,” he said. “This has been the most difficult to balance and there are a lot of things that contribute to that such as the earn rate and spend rate of CoD points, plus XP is always a tough thing to balance out.

“With all these things we’re adding to purchase you have to balance not only the weapons and perks against each other but also when you consider how much they’re going to cost.”

All this, however, would have been more difficult if Treyarch wasn’t solely dedicated to COD games.

“Almost two years ago now, they re-focused all their efforts on retooling the studio and on the development process. One of those was having every developer focusing on Call of Duty when we were working on World at War,” he said.

“Now it has allowed us to have a dedicated single-player and multi-player team since day one. They haven’t been distracted by other things so it has allowed out MP team to use their resources to make more than we’ve ever made before, but also really polish and balance it to the degree that we felt was necessary.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops is out November 9 for PC, PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360, Gary Oldman and Ed Harris voices included.

Its good that they’re adding more recoil and bullets dont go perfectly straight. But you just need to watch the latest trailer to see that online will be a rocket fest. Add to that the lame crossbow and the reloadable, insta-kill, explodes when misses ballistic knife and you’ve got yourself one very unbalanced looking game.

I haven’t seen any extra recoil in any of those videos.

I think IW got it right by focusing on the recoil itself instead of gimping the weapons. Online shooters should be about skill and challenge, not the kind of dumb luck you get when you add dispersion to the weapons or use static HP, so the guy who hides, clings to a medic or just comes out of a spawn always has the upper hand. Or indeed just gets lucky.

But yeah, I’d like to see explosives nerfed across the board. Leave the boomboom to Team Fortress 2. Tossed ‘nades worked fine imo.

Why didnt they keep the knife stab animation from WaW? It looked alot better then the one from CoD4/MW2 they’re using now.

Not like it can get any more unbalanced than it already is anyway.

Ya know I can see that happening, putting in a microtransaction type thingie for perks. Fits in line with a lot of other crap going on in the game world. Don’t let Patcher catch wind of it tho, he will start selling it to game biz execs.

If people listened to Pachter they’d be out of a job in a week.

His 50% accuracy rate is what scientists call “wild guessing”.

i dont think there will be a fee for extra cod points not because activision wouldn’t want to BUT because technically you are gambling these points, if these points are equivalent to cash then activision is going to have a lot of legal issues with this.

Also it looks like a BIG improvement over MW2 and heck i’m a treyarch sceptic, i’ll be keeping an eye on it.

I’d say 50% is being somewhat generous…

I think Treyarch are trying a little too hard with this game.

I’ve seen that it’s now harder to get kills, but who asked for it? Surely not the millions who play the game day after day, almost a year after release?

Treyarch seem to be adjusting the gameplay based on the whinges of a minority who don’t even play CoD, or even FPS’s in general.

The new online features seem really deep, although that’s probably partly due to the way that they seem to be ripped off from Battle.net (and other places, I’m sure).

I’m not sure if I’ll even get this, but if I do, it’ll probably be for PC.

I think treyarch’s call of duty titles are the best, iw revolutionized console multiplayer with cod 4, but they fucked mw2 up. WaW mp felt a lot better to me than mw2 does now. I am genuinely excited for black ops . I’m not worried about the ballistic knife or any other addition to the game b/c surely there will be a counter maneuver just like there is now. Day 1 buy, regular edition, no need for the toys.

The difficulty in getting kills in MW2 is down to who you’re up against, and that’s how it should be in any competitive game. If you’re not getting kills, you just have to improve your game.

As I understand it, Treyarch are aiming for a compromise between WaW and MW2, which sounds a little silly to me because they weren’t that far apart to begin with. I’d argue that a BAR in WaW was a lot easier to handle than an L86A1 in MW2 (also one of the most fun guns I’ve managed to tame so far).

I don’t think it’s gonna be that different. I haven’t seen anything that scared me in any of the videos (ridiculous chopper sections aside) but Treyarch always go too far trying to reinvent the wheel whenever they make a game. They should just ditch the little brother issues, and stick with the winning formula.

@20 Have you seen something I haven’t? I haven’t seen anything pointing to a major change.

Like I said, it’s the people who don’t even play the game who are moaning about the accuracy. The 10 million or so regulars that the likes of Pachter keep mentioning don’t seem to have a problem…

@25: This interview gives a rundown of the major changes.

Considering they didn’t bother balancing World at War at all (dear god, the SMGs), I should very much hope that they’re making more of an effort on BlOps.

WaW is about 1000x more balanced than MW2 and 20,000x less borked online.

@26 Ah, thanks for the link.

I like what they’re trying to do with the game modes, but judging from those videos Treyarch haven’t gotten any better at making levels. Recoil could go either way judging from that video.

I think it’s pretty lame to keep the attack dogs from WaW. Nothing wrong with killstreaks, but they were just completely devoid of any sort of balance.

@28 Lol…

@ 29 how were the dogs devoid of balance when they were quite easy to kill? Just curious.

@30: np

Hutch (pro player) had some BO vids on his channel, where he claimed that he was getting hit markers where he would have gotten kills in MW2. He thinks that the gun play is closer to CoD2 than CoD4…
