Switch sales in Japan outpace PS4’s during similar four week launch period

During its first four weeks on the market in Japan, Nintendo's Switch console has sold better than PlayStation 4 in the same respective launch period.

According to the latest Media Create figures, for the reporting week ending March 26, Switch sold 78,441 units, up from 49,913 units the prior week (thanks, Gematsu). Since release, lifetime sales for the console have hit 519,504 units.

Comparatively, during its first four weeks on the market, 439,810 PS4 units were sold in the region. According to MCV, in Japan, PS4 didn't pass half a million in unit sales until it has been on the market for almost eight weeks.

That said, Sony's console is currently the best-selling current-gen system to date and as of January 2017, it has sold over 53.4 million units worldwide. Life-to-date in Japan, PS4 has moved 4.6 million units.

Nintendo has yet to confirm sales figures for Switch, but SuperData estimates put the console at 1.5 million sold worldwide as of March 15.

The system moved 80,000 units during its launch weekend in the UK and in Japan it moved 329,152 units its first three days on the market. Nintendo said Switch sold more units than any other Nintendo console in its first two days on the market in North America.

In Japan, the fiscal year ends on April 1, and Nintendo plans to release its year-end fiscal earnings report on April 27. It's possible the company will provide sales figures at that time.
