Ghost Recon 3DS to be turn-based squad game with "Advance Wars feel"

Despite appearances to the contrary, the 3DS' launch lineup isn't all quick ports whose biggest upgrades are the addition of "3D" to their titles. Case in point: Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. It's a brand new turn-based tactical game from none other than the creator of X-Com himself, Julian Gollop.

Yes, yes, we know Ocarina of Time is the greatest game of all time [citation needed], but Shadow Wars looks to be a pretty darn promising upstart. Read all about it after the break.

Speaking with Tiny Cartridge, Gollop dove into the nitty gritty of his new game. Developed in conjunction with Ubisoft's Sofia/Bulgaria team, Shadow Wars - like many other launch titles - is sadly lacking in online and StreetPass functionality, but looks to make up for it with some real meat on its bones.

"You have six characters you control, each with unique abilities and equipment. You can level them up, gaining abilities and more equipment options. … The unique thing with GRSW is the level of detail in the missions and the tactical system. During missions you have various allies, and a whole variety of objectives — rescuing prisoners, blowing up bridges and trains, assassinating key villains, and so on," Gollop said.

"The tactical system, and the way the weapons work, have a bit more of an Advance Wars feel — indirect launchers, area effect, EMP grenades, etc. There is a unique ‘support fire’ mechanic. Machine guns are best for this — they will return fire if nearby allies are attacked."

He also added that terrain effects play a significant role, and that amassing "command points" allows you to bring in the big guns with airstrikes and things of the like - which, to us, sound quite similar to Advance Wars' CO powers.

Color us interested, if only because we're suckers for tiny men blowing each other to tinier bits, and Julian Gollop knows tactical games better than most people subconsciously know all irritating commercial jingles. The game's out on 3DS day-one, or March 25 for those of you who are slaves to calendars and time and all that overrated jazz.
