Bungie has confirmed to fans that Xbox Live Gold is a requirement to play the Destiny beta on Xbox platforms.

It’s no surprise, but it still stings for some players. However, Sony’s PlayStation Plus service is also needed for some “activities” according to the developer, although it is yet to elaborate further.

The Destiny beta goes live this week. You can win access to the beta by entering our competition here.

Officially starting on July 17th, the beta will get underway a little earlier with “trusted allies” according to Bungie. Watch the skies.

The “activities” are PvP Crucible mode and 3-man co-op Strikes(Basically dungeons) which need another players to start.

It even says “requires PS+” when you hover over them on the game UI.

Story and open world exploration can be played offline for free but you won’t see other players running around.

@1 That’s interesting to know, I thought the game was online only. When I read the headline I thought “well yeah, it’s an online game, who on Earth would have pre-ordered this while not having a gold sub?”

Still though, I think a significant amount of features will be online and you wouldn’t want to play this game without your gold or PS+.

I’ve got to stop thinking of this as a proper release… its just a beta… its just a beta…

Thats an interesting compromise. So i assume that’ll be the case with the final build too. But is the game just not playable at all without Gold on Xbox? Seems thats the case with the beta.

    Gekidami,
To be honest, I’d require the online connection. The last thing Bungie needs is some moron complaining because he didn’t realize that 90% of the game required a connection.
