Del Toro: Levine is “one of the best world creators”

Lauded filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has described BioShock creator Ken Levine as one of the masters of world creation.

“Two days ago, my daughter and I finished BioShock Infinite. It’s such a great mindfuck,” del Toro said at an E3 event, as reported by Polygon.

“It’s also beautiful and I think, obviously, Levine always has such beautiful cross-cultural references, like Comstock and the Civil War and all that.

“I love the richness of those worlds. He’s one of the best world creators in any of the visual forms, period.”

High praise indeed, and del Toro has a longstanding interest in games. He loves Portal, for example, and signed up with THQ to produce a triology of horror sandbox titles which were an unfortunate casualty of the publisher’s collapse – although there is yet hope.

He is, but I remain unconvinced (System Shock 2 aside) he’s totally sure what to do with the world’s he creates. Bioshock Infinite was a setting/theme wasted on a by the numbers “clear the room and move on” FPS shooter IMHO and Bioshock only marginally better.

But I did love all the moments I could just “be” in the place vs engaging in cookie cutter shootouts.

Yeah, every room feels real and has a sense of place.

One of my MAJOR loves of videogames is not twitch shooting, or displaying skillzorz or playing with friends even. It’s the sense of discovery I felt playing Ocarina of Time or Soul Reaver or Dead Space or SuperMarioworld or Metroid Prime or Demon’s Souls…

What’s around the next corner, what’s through that door, if I manage to open that door what or who’s in there? Where is that last Infusion. Where is the final upgrade for my wave buster… That more than anything keeps me playing games, and Levine if good at that shit. In his case it’s because his games are always full of rooms you don’t even need to go into. Thumbs up!
