    I’m getting really fed up of Eurogamers reviews lately. They used to be my most trusted review site but now they seem to be heading the way of Edge trying to be over critical. It almost comes across that most of there reviewers are fed up of playing games.

    I know it’s opinion and 8/10 is a good score but recently there reviews of some games has been really off, Dead Island is a good example…

    We all know that Gears 3 is a 10/10 with the amount of work they’ve put into it. Updated graphics, 3d mode, 4 player co-op, 3 fleshed out multiplayer modes, dedicated servers the list goes on and on!

    They mentioned the gameplay being outdated, the same could be said about any genre at the moment…

    @21, no, it’s just you are too soft.

    Eurogamer does extremely good job and 10/10 means that the game is perfect.
    But Gears is not… by the reviewer and if you don’t agree with him it’s your only problem and it’s your opinion.

    Also, game industry journalsm is too soft anyway. If you want to look for the REAL scores go to the movie section in metacritic and find me a movie with 90 rating this year. Now this is a journalism.

    PS: also, to begin with. You didn’t played it and already say it’s 10/10? Grow up.

    @7

    Same solid, well thought out third person shooting action you can enjoy with friends you mean?

    You have missed the point rather, Gears over the top macho action is what people expect of the series, did you think they would change it too a thoughtful slow paced heavy rain style thriller just because you didn’t enjoy the first 2 games?

    I have just read there review, there main critiques are based on gameplay mechanics which we all knew would be unchanged but for fans of the series they are irrelevant. I understand that fans of the series will buy this anyway (Eurogamer also knows this hence they can be cool and downplay big titles) but as I said earlier, games like dead island are receiving really bad reviews.

    Dead island is prob one of my favourite games of the year so far and I almost over looked it because of their review. As games cost 40 quid a pop in most places, I trust reviewers not to be jaded by gaming.

    10/10 does not mean perfect. Lets take a look at EG’s scoring policy for 10/10, hmm, now what does it say here:

    Does 10/10 represent perfection?

    No. However, a 10/10 score does mean that we recommend a game to everyone.

    Says it all really!

    #39 4 years ago

  42. Erthazus

    @34, and gameplay mechanics should not be changed. They are great. What reviewers say about gameplay is that Gears of War 3 doesn’t quite live up to expectations is only a testament to how high Epic raised the bar in past efforts. With Gears Of War 3 they didn’t pushed it forward.
    8/10 is a very good score for a tripple AAA title. 8/10 means that this is a very good game by Eurogamer standards. It’s just nothing new there you can expect.

    and Dead Island is probably your favourite game, but it has a lot of bugs and problems. It sure can be a fun or a great game but with a lot of frustrations for other people.

    @39, So grandmother can enjoy it too?
    give me a break, alright?
    10/10 means that they completely raised the bar with innovation, technology, creativity, story and etc.

    Can you score game 11/10? you can’t because there is nothing higher than 10/10 and that is perfection. 9/10 is an excellent game, 8/10 is a fantastic experience and etc.

  43. Gekidami

    Seems the biggest gripe is still the controls. Shame really, i’ve always hated how characters in this series are driven rather than controlled, the clunky controls made PvP MP in the first 2 games near unplayable to me, doubt i’ll be doing much of that this time round either.

    I still think EG’s 8 could be right, I just wanted to point out that 10/10 never means a perfect game :)

    @38 – Just because it’s a well established IP doesn’t mean to say it’s going to be great, like all these reviews are claiming.

    Reviews are to be taken with a pinch of salt these days and only the most naive gamer would believe all of the reviews above.

    @7, This time I actually agree with your constant pessimism.

    @27, Agreed, journalists are too scared of handing out 5′s or 6′s for average games.

    If a mate came over or vice versa & they wanted to play, I’d probably enjoy a little horde but aside from that, I just never enjoyed anything about the franchise, same goes for zombies in CoD… If only we could buy portions of games.

    @42

    A lot of their critique was on the gameplay, I.e. It feels old fashioned and limited. We all new the gameplay mechanics would be unchanged.

    As for dead island, I’ve been playing 4 player co-op on the 360 version and only had one bug in about 50 hours of gameplay ( a weapon falling through the floor when someone dropped it ).

    They also gave fallout new Vegas a 9 / 10 which was riddled with bugs.

    In the dead island review they kept going on about the cg trailer, did they really think that would represent the final game?!!

    All I’m saying is I no longer trust a lot of their reviews like I used too. I think there heading the way of Edge. Being critical is fine but make the review 4 or 5 pages and really flesh out your points, don’t just say, “clipping is a problem when chopping would with the chainsaw”, very lame review of a huge game in my opinion…

    It’s special when a talented company with great financial backing with a good knowledge of their brand and fan base create a blockbuster game. It doesn’t come along very often, Halo Reach being another good example.

    We all know it’s AAA and 10/10 (at least 9/10) and a great end to the trilogy.

    @28 I didn’t “miss the point” in the slightest. I’m well of the point of Gears of War. That doesn’t make it good.

    People expect vampires in Twilight to sparkle, but they’re still shit vampires.

    @48 I’m not “constantly pessimistic”, thank you very much. It’s called having a critical opinion.

    I love how people blindly ignore my constantly positive posts in countless news story when they make claims like that about me.

    I guess it’s true what they say. People only ever pay attention to the negative.

    #55 4 years ago
  56. peteb

    @#42

    I think you are taking the “recommended for everyone” a little too literally. A game being accessible to a wider audience is not the same as a game being recommended for “everyone”. (Everyone in this sense is everyone who reads the gaming site, so I think grandma is exempt from that). By your reckoning, only games that offer “grandma mode” can get 10/10 then?

    I merely pointed out that the website themselves say that 10/10 is not perfect. Nothing is perfect I’m afraid, not you, not me, not a 10/10 game (maybe its close, maybe its still flawed but everything else more than makes up for it, whos to say). I would not get bogged down in the mathematics of what 10/10 means, but you know, read the text instead.

    Completely raising the bar with innovation, technology, creativity, story and etc is something completely different yes, my point here is that you think 10/10 means perfection, I’m just saying it doesn’t.

    Your first comment said, “same tacky gameplay” etc…

    Of course it would have the same kind of gameplay, plot themes etc… When do games ever completely step away from the mould created by 2 prequels? It was an irrelevant and snarky comment.

    Why turn up to the party just to complain about it…

    @55, Lately I’ve only seen negative come out of you, to be fair, you probably enjoy many of the games that I don’t even read about but posting a critical opinion about a game you haven’t played yet is being negative & you’ve done it a fair bit lately.

  62. Ireland Michael

    @58 Because where I come from, not everyone whines when someone has a difference of opinion.

    When someone has to criticise others for having critical opinions, they’re the one with the problem.

    If you don’t like what I have to say, you could simply just ignore me, instead of complaining about the way I choose to look at things.

    @59 Then look harder.

    I’m positive when things I have a positive opinion about are posted. It just so happens that things I have a negative opinion on are common right now.

    Hilariously, people were saying the *exact* same thing you’re saying to me now back when God of War 3 came out.

    HEY GUYS I KNOW THIS IS A THREAD WHERE PEOPLE ARE SAYING THE REVIEWS ARE GOOD AND THERE’S GENERALLY A GOOD FEELING OF OPTIMISM AND ANTICIPATION, BUT I THOUGHT I’D JUST POP IN TO TELL YOU YOU’RE ALL WRONG AND GEARS OF WAR IS SHIT AND BORING.

    #63 4 years ago
  64. monkeygourmet

    @62

    It’s more interesting commenting on how generic a game is when it’s the first title of a series. Commenting negatively on features that would never change 3 games in is just a waste of time.

    If they added features that didn’t quite work, that is a more interesting critique. I.e. How do the new mechs control and fit into the game, does it change the tactics of gameplay etc.. How the the new weapons stack up, are the new enemy creatures enjoyable to fight?!

    None of this was mentioned in their review and you coming in just stating the obvious makes you look like a troll.

    #64 4 years ago
  65. Ireland Michael

    Yet another person who actually doesn’t understand the definition of the word “trolling”. Joy.

    Having an opinion is not trolling.

    You just don’t like what I have to say to the point where you feel the need to complain to me directly about it. Enjoying wasting your breath, are you?

    Of course nothing is perfect what i said is that 10/10 is a PERFECT experience.

    Perfect experience that have stunning visuals, fantastic and innovative gameplay that pushed the boundaries and etc. Story that is over the top and etc. etc. and etc.

    10/10 means that it’s surpassed everyone’s expectation in every aspect there is.
    Of course there are no perfect games. Every game have bugs… small or not. Games are software.

    you can’t just make a review and say: “it’s fun and stuff” and in the end put 10/10 to it. thats not review, that’s bias.

    You need to understand that not all games offer 10/10 experience. Look at the metacritic. You really believe that almost every AAA game out there is living up to the hype from 89-96 meta? Come on guys.

    #68 4 years ago
  69. monkeygourmet

    @65

    I define trolling as someone making snarky comments on a thread in an effort to be provocative without actually backing them up.

    Which is exactly what you did with your first comment earlier in the thread.

    The *yawn* comment doesn’t help either as that looks pretentious. Of course having personnal opinions is very important and builds your character, the problem is you may be asked to elaborate on them sometimes.

    Simply coming into a thread and going “boring!” isnt really helpful to anyone, and quite frankly more a waste of your time…

    If you can’t be bothered to say why you don’t actually like the game or how you think certain parts of gameplay couldn’t be improved, what is the point of saying anything in the first place?

    #69 4 years ago
  70. viralshag

    @ peteb, what did I tell you? Waste of time…

    @68, You’re missing his point. He is simply saying that in terms of a Eurogamer review, they have stated that 10/10 is not perfect by their definition.

    So it really does not matter what your opinion or definition of what 10/10 means.

    #75 4 years ago
  76. Zana

    @73 And I gladly welcome them. Well actually, go on playing mindless shooters, it’s okay, but please, dear reviewers, stop giving them perfect scores. It’s like giving 10 out of 10 to crappy Hollywoodian movies such as Captain America. Then, you are unable to value games that actually deserve high scores thanks to their refined designs.

    #76 4 years ago
  77. Dralen

    @76 That’s pretty harsh. I actually wasn’t a fan of Gears of War until I played the beta for 3; which was brilliant by the way. The first two were good, but they had so many issues online, and that really killed them for me.

    #77 4 years ago
  78. Fin

    @76

    wat. If a game (or film) is good, then it should be given a good score. Sure arty games should be given their due, but that doesn’t detract from games like Gears (or [insert whatever "mindless shooter" you care to name]) are actually pretty good.

    If Captain America was awesome, it should be given a 10. Genres or lack of originality shouldn’t detract from something’s core quality.

    #78 4 years ago
  79. monkeygourmet

    @76

    No, just don’t compare genres. I would never compare battlefield to f-zero for example.

    You don’t seem to understand how reviews tend to work. In films for example, would you compare Casablanca to Finding Nemo?

    #79 4 years ago
  80. G1GAHURTZ

    Gears 1 & 2 are two of my fave games, ever.

    This one looks amazing compared to those two, so I’m pretty hyped for the third installment.

    Let the haters hate.

    They’re just upset because their artsy fartsy games never get the limelight.

    #80 4 years ago
  81. Christopher Jack

    @69, Awesome number by the way, but trolling is the intention of seeking a negative reaction just for the lulz, he clearly wasn’t, he was just stating that he doesn’t like it & why. I also agree with him but I do think if you’re going to post a critical comment, you need to explain yourself a little better otherwise you do appear as a troll, simple fact.

    #81 4 years ago
  82. Ireland Michael

    @69 See, that’s the thing. I’m not “trying to be provocative” in the slightest. I’m simply stating my opinion as it stands.

    I don’t have to make a long, draw out essay to explain why I dislike the franchise. This isn’t debate school. It’s not my duty to justify my opinion to you simply because you don’t agree with it. I don’t see you singling out other people expecting them to explain why they *do* like it. Why is a negative opinion more open to scrutiny than a positive one?

    And you didn’t ask me to elaborate on my opinion. You were too busy giving out to me simply for having a negative opinion to do so. Now, if you actually want to discuss the subject of why I think the game is completely undeserving of its scoring without resorting to ad hominem attacks, I’m more than willing to do so.

    Mind you, I already explained why I think the game doesn’t deserve these ridiculously unwarranted scores in my very first post anyway.

    #82 4 years ago
  83. G1GAHURTZ

    O’Connor, surely if you’re repeatedly called out for trolling, there must be something in it?

    #83 4 years ago
  84. Christopher Jack

    “Why is a negative opinion more open to scrutiny than a positive one?” Depends, being negative about a good thing makes one appear as a dick, especially if you don’t explain why you’re being negative but you can also appear as a dick if you like negative things, like genocide or rape.

    @82

    I don’t often comment on this site but I read the articles and check the comment sections quite a lot. Of course you don’t have to elaborate on your opinions but it makes it all the more interesting to read when you do.

    A large portion of your contributions tend to be dismissive, without actually explaining why. This comes across as arrogant unfortunatly. I was just reading the resistance 3 forum thread earlier where Frostquake outlined points where he found the game to be sub par. It was a good read as I was thinking about purchasing the game.

    You however decided to chime in with: the problem with resistance 3 is that it’s a resistance game…

    Not helpful or on topic in the slightest. As a previous poster stated, it just comes across as negative. Being critical of a medium is great but as I said before it helps to elaborate on your statements.

    And this isn’t debating club, but coming onto a forum and making a brash statement without backing it up is always going to illicit a response.

    @80 Weak argument is weak. Again, you seem incapable of comprehending that some of us might just simply think a game is shit, instead of it being some sort of defense mechanism against our own personal preferences not being acknowledged.

    The fact that this viewpoint of is coming from VG247′s “Poster Boy for Franchise Over-Protectiveness” is an irony that I’m sure isn’t lost on many of us

    I find testerone fueled man-fantasies boring as fuck. I think they’re lazy and creatively vapid. The kind of testosterone fueled chest-pumping idiocy that these games obsess over puts me to sleep.

    The gameplay mechanics are old and tired, the franchise tries way too desperately to be taken seriously on an emotional level while its character design and world are completely at odds with that idea. It’s characters lack depth, subtlety or charm, and it’s violence is violence for violence sake.

    There’s a reason why Shakespeare is considered a creative genius and Justin Bieber is not. I am not going to applaud a game that lacks any real merits beyond pretty graphics and brainless violence when far better games (Uncharted) are able to do the same thing with far more depth, quality and genuine identity.

    (Oh, did the supposed 360 fanboy just applaud a PS3 exclusive over a 360 exclusive? THE HORROR! Or maybe I was never a format fanboy in the first place. Crazy thought.)

    @83 Herp a derp. Derpity de derp. Derp derp!

    @86 The Resistance games have always been bad. Therefore his problem was expecting it to actually be good. There W’s nothing more I needed to elaborate.

    Arrogant? I’m one of the most arrogant people you’ll ever meet. I’m fully aware of that fact. It’s part of my charm. *wink*

    @89 Resistance 3 is a great game and definantly worth buying for ps3 owners, like Gears3 is for xbox owners. Frostquake don’t know what he’s on about, I’ve been playing it and R3 is an amazing exclusive to PS categlog.

    Portal 2 now that’s a 10/10 game, wasn’t expecting it to be better than the first.

    #92 4 years ago
  93. Ireland Michael

    @90 Yeah, I’m an Xbot… in a thread in which I’m negatively criticising a 360 game.

    It’s the internet. I’m fully aware how badly people online react to someone when they present a negative opinion. It’s no skin off my back.

    I have these kinds of discussions with gaming friends offline all the the time and they never react in the fashion people on the internet do. Do all your friends have the exact same opinions as you? No, didn’t think so. Do you complain to them and expect them to explain every little thing they don’t like? No, didn’t think so.

    If I want to go in-depth on why I do or don’t like a game, I’ll write a damn review about it.

    #96 4 years ago
  97. monkeygourmet

    @91

    It’s not the 8/10 that’s the only problem, it’s just a bad review from Eurogamer that I feel has been a trend recently. That’s the main problem, I really don’t want the site to go the way of of Edge which I feel has become over critical for the sake of it.

    The review was too short for such a big game and hardly covered any of the new features in any detail while at the same time criticising features we all new wouldn’t have changed.

    Criticism is great when constructive, however if it’s not it’s a waste of time. Most games could be ripped apart if you focus on the negative aspects,

    ie: mario galaxy 2, more of the same, Zelda, same old gameplay, call of duty, boring same gameplay etc etc…

    As someone said on a different forum: gears is still the benchmark 3rd person shooter, it doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel, it IS the wheel…

    #97 4 years ago
  98. daytripper

    @93 yes it’s the internet and no i don’t act like that here or in real life. the internet for me, in a lot of cases, is for people to act like they would want to in the real world but havent got the bottle to do so(not saying you or anything)

    102′s comment makes perfect sense. And you don’t. Never did. All you like to do is be the center of arguments CONSTANTLY waving your arrogant pompous cock in our faces with an attitute like you are the most knowledgeable supreme being of all eternity….., this thread being YET ANOTHER prime example.

    What a joke.

    We get it. You don’t like Gears of War. you don’t like God of War. Fine. Who gives a rats ass. Millions of other gamers disagree. Another benefit of free will.. To each their own.

    I think a lot of Nintendo wii games suck, but I don’t go around posting “yawn, this game’s boring, next please” in their related forums/topics/discussions/etc like you do. Starting to see a clearer picture here? Ofcourse not. Your just as bad as TEA, erth, and the others sometimes in your own way…

  136. G1GAHURTZ

    @133:

    You have to question the logic of printing that “review”. The guy basically says that he didn’t like Gears 1 and 2 because he didn’t like the story, and it was too ‘macho’ for him, so why in the world is he ‘reviewing’ the third game?

    To say that a video game is bad because the characters aren’t believable enough is nothing short of ridiculous.

    #136 4 years ago
  137. Phoenixblight

    @136

    Agreed. Because Gamers are playing videogames because of their realism *rolls eyes*

    @137:

    I mean, come on…

    This is a game where you have a chainsaw(!) on the end of a gun that shoots more powerful bullets if you reload it at exactly the right time!

    What are people expecting in terms of believability after that??

    #139 4 years ago
  140. Phoenixblight

    Also forgot being able to slide from cover to cover like the characters have roller skates on their shoes XD

    I’m going to get my string vest on, secure a twelve-pack of Stella Artois (Oh yeah, I went there), sit down and watch Commando for every day of the week until I get my copy of Gears of War 3 through the post.

    It’s like:

    ‘Yeah, I can feel Dom’s pain and look into his essence… I can tell that he had a bad childhood, but he was taken under the wing of a general that loved him and nutured him caringly, but with discipline. I can see that he has gone through a deep trauma in his life…

    Which is why he chainsaws giant aliens.’

    I really wanted to get this at launch but my live sub just ran out and I’ve been unable to find an acceptable price for renewal. Too many good games coming out to waste cash on a live sub, it basically costs a game to buy, and right now I’d rather buy one of the 6 or 7 AAA games coming to pc in the next 2 months than live.

    #144 4 years ago
  145. YoungZer0

    @139: I agree. Don’t understand why the story of Mass Effect has to make sense. I mean Shepard blasts aliens! ALIENS! CRAYYYZEEE!

    #145 4 years ago
  146. G1GAHURTZ

    @ freedoms:

    You can just pay for one month, then cancel your sub.

    #146 4 years ago
  147. DSB

    There’s a pretty big difference between story and suspension of disbelief though. A designer is perfectly capable of creating his own coherent world, and we’ll buy it if it’s done well enough, without worrying too much about the science or logic of it.

    Equally so, some games try to go deep on the stories, whereas others just use them as a function to advance the gameplay. I like both personally.

    I always thought Gears of War was a little too derivative. There’s just too much of “random aliens meet random space marines” these days. If the aliens had a personality beyond just “ugly and mean”, that might be interesting, but it’s way too samey for me.

    @154 – He said he was glad to be able to completely wrap up the trilogy. I asked him if he could see it expanding into different genres, and he said they could make an FPS or a strategy game or whatever else. He wasn’t specific at all.

    @ reask:

    Yeah, I’m up for that. I’m pretty sure tea will be on this, day 1. He loved both the other Gears’ iirc. I was thinking about that earlier.

    Apparently, you can do 4 player competitive co-op online, so we’ve got to get another person, and I know Pat’s pumped for Gears 3, too…

    @G1GA, I know, but paying for smaller units feels pretty uneconomical. I could take the spotlight deal of 20% off, but I know they’ve done it cheaper, so I’m holding out.

    @Fin, that sounds like a good deal, I’ll see if I can swing by a Game tmw and see if they’ve got anything similar.

  170. Fin

    This was in the Oxford St (London) store last week, so I doubt it’s still around. Ask at counter for the £30/12month sub – the ones on the shelves were priced £40, but behind the counter they had £30 stickers!

    #170 4 years ago
  171. StolenGlory

    Don’t they usually offer you ridiculous deals on the dashboard if you let your Gold membership expire anyway?

    I distinctly remember doing that and then noticing an advert on the dashboard saying that I could get 12 months for £23.99 if I signed back up.

    #171 4 years ago

    LOL!

    Cool, but seriously, does it make you sweat?

    I mean, how good is it compared to 20 minutes on a treadmill?

    #177 4 years ago
  178. Ireland Michael

    @177 The high level cardio stuff is easily as good at burning calories as any treadmill. As with any cardio, it’s all about how much energy you put into it.

    The weight training will make you sweat like a fucking bitch. And probably cause a heart-attack in anyone who isn’t genuinely fit.

    I lost over twenty pounds this year, with this game was part of my exercise routine. It can definitely help.

    #178 4 years ago
  179. G1GAHURTZ

    I’m very sceptical, but I’ll take your word for it.

    #179 4 years ago
  180. StolenGlory

    @177

    It does actually make you break out in quite a sweat I find.

    They basically break up the regimen into Gym Games and Activities.

    Activities tend to be more structured and rigid, with you mimicking the posture of the model on screen (the tracking is actually pretty accurate if i’m honest) and doing exercises appropriate to your goals. For example, one of the Men’s Health strength workouts, has you doing dumbell lifts and squats either weights-free to master the form or you can actually pick up and use one of your real-world weights during the exercise. In addition to this there are the usual smattering of cardio boxing exercises (which must be progressively unlocked), Zen (Tai-Chi), dancing and bodypump-esque exercise classes.

    Gym games on the other hand, tend to be more of a drop-in, drop-out type of affair with minimal time dedication needed. One of the gym games that always gets the sweat pouring is the ‘Virtual Smash’ game, in which you must kick, punch, knee and elbow various blocks as they appear on screen and at harder levels, you must squat to avoid swinging blocks that if hit you, reduce your score.

    It’s all quite well done if i’m being honest; your calories are persistently tracked and you can upload it to some sort of database which tells you how well you are doing and tracks your progress.

    Obviously, titles like this are never meant to supplant a gym workout but for someone who maybe can’t afford, or doesn’t have time to go to a gym, it’s a good way to keep active and for those of us who do frequent our local sweat factory, it makes for a fine workout companion all things told :)

    Hmm…

    Interesting. Thanks SG.

    #181 4 years ago
  182. viralshag

    I’m gonna back up Ireland and Stolen here. I haven’t played much of Your Shape but I have done some of the Zen work outs after going to the regular gym and that had me in more of a sweat than the boxing…

    If you really focus and put in the effort you would be surprised at some of the results. I have a female friend who uses it a lot more regularly and she has praised it to high heaven.
