Battlefield 3 demo shows live PS3 gameplay – watch it here

Friday, 17th June 2011 07:38 GMT By Debabrata Nath

DICE gave a live demonstration of the PS3 version of Battefield 3 on Late Night with Jimmy Falon earlier tonight. The video contains the first ever console gameplay footage of the title outside of the engine segments hidden away in the Frostbite tech demo movie at E3. Battlefield 3 releases on October 25 in the US and October 28 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Watch the footage below.

  1. Xuchilbara

“Its a big shooter game right? Like a war shooter” – I reallywish he would just stop

The good news is the 5 seconds he let them play it looked almost identical to the PC version… still getting it on pc

  2. Dannybuoy

That looks pretty sweet to me.

  3. themadjock

Fallon is a prick, is his accent for real!!!! and he’s shit at the game. On the plus side some textures look a bit flatter than on PC but the Frostbite engine is still working nicely.

In before Erthazeus complains about how big an impact the slightly dodgy shadows and a bit of pop in will affect the overall gameplay experience, plus did everyone else notice the complete lack of 3d grass?

  5. Aman27deep

@4 – The PS3 (And the 360) simply can’t render it. You gotta wait for the next PS (and the xbox) to be able to do that.

That’s why PC is the best platform for Shooters!

  6. alterecho

It still looks better than other console games (maybe not better than Crysis 2 , since the game was built on a console base).

The smoke effects reminds me of Call Of Duty 3 which i played on a PS2 when it was actually built for current gen consoles.

    #6 4 years ago

Don’t get me wrong, it still looks pretty cool on PS3, but it’s nowhere near as good as what I’ve seen from the PC version so far.

It’s a bit ridiculous of EA to dismiss any differences between them.

My god, he’s such a mainstream American idiot, so loud, so stupid. “OMG WOW OMFG OMG GUYS, GUYS OMG!!!!”

  9. Moonwalker1982

Don’t you guys a weird distortion effect on the player itself alot of the time? It looks really good though.

    #9 4 years ago
  10. Blerk

Seems solid. And almost entirely unexciting.

    /really doesn’t “get it”

    #10 4 years ago
  11. Lounds

reminds me of GRAW2, the graphics design for PS3, PC will blow everything apart lol

    #11 4 years ago
  12. Overdos3

This video was clearly a message to Bobby Kotick who said that DICE didnt show any console footage ;).

    F*** you Kotick :)

    #12 4 years ago
  13. Moonwalker1982

Nevermind about the distortion effect, it’s only when i try to watch it in 1080p.

    #13 4 years ago
  14. manamana

Actually I like very much what I see. What more can we expect out of a console from half a decade ago? And how is it even possible to compare it to Crysis2 based on this footage? o_O

Here is a better quality version btw.

    #14 4 years ago
  15. AbolfazlA

Awesome , I will buy it for PS3

    #15 4 years ago
  16. Moonwalker1982

I’m buying it for 360, all my friends are on there and for many more reasons. I just hope 360 is just as good, i certainly don’t expect it to be any less.

    #16 4 years ago
  17. minxamo

Damnit show it on xbox 360!!
I’m seriously getting worried that they’re just going to port a 320×240 blocky QAA mess over to 360…

    #17 4 years ago
  18. AHA-Lambda

my pc would probly give me similar graphics anyway so i’ll get it on ps3 i think

    #18 4 years ago
  19. Moonwalker1982

They wouldn’t do that, look at how good BFBC2 turned out on Xbox 360. On the GT forum people are discussing this and apparently the PS3 version of BC2 didn’t turn out so well, and they don’t want to let PS3 owners down, and thus they make sure the PS3 version is great too. Porting from PC to 360 is very easy they say, so we shouldn;t worry. I hope they are right about that.

It IS kinda worrysome that we’ve yet to see anything from the 360. It was absent from E3 because the version wasn’t finished enough yet they said.

You’re a noob :). Thinking that ps3 graphics are as good as pc graphics is well … a bit retard.
Go watch some PC Gameplay and you’ll understand :).

You appear to be a bit of a noob at reading and comprehension :)

    #21 4 years ago
  22. Moonwalker1982

    @ 20

He simply means that his PC probably wouldn’t be able to run the game on the settings that they used for the PC footage. So in that sense it would look similar to the PS3 footage on his PC. Quite simple really…

I keep seeing alot of concerns about the 360 version, people on other forums actually claiming that DICE has said the 360 is struggling with BF3, well…i’ve never heard that before, clearly nonsense.

  23. Nozz

    PC Footage ☑
    Console Footage ☑
    In Depth Multi-player footage ☐

I will be patient for now, but please show us multi-player for more than 30 seconds!

Either way, looks great will probably get this on PS3 because my friends list on PC is kinda weak.

  24. M. K.

Graphics look like BC2, but far more important, they seem to make the controls more flexible and fluid. Did you notice how fix the weapon change was, and how fast he was climbing(!) over the wall.

Now I’m really looking forward to it :)

/e: almost forgot it: Fallon is annoying :D and I’m still missing multiplayer gameplay, beta can’t come soon enough.

    #24 4 years ago
  25. DrDamn

Is Fallon on again tonight? If so what is being saved for Friday in this games special week?

  26. Maximum Payne

    @23 Nice ”hit” boxes :P
Agree selling point of Battlefield and we haven’t see it “(
If I remember they show for Bad Company 2 like 6 episodes for MP ….

    #26 4 years ago
  27. M. K.

@#25: Watch the end of the video ;) It’s a Zelda game, but I don’t remember which one :D

    #27 4 years ago
  28. TikiSadZombie

Looks great, I’m buying. (Obviously not like PC but I can deal with that, I’m not a graphics whore).

    #28 4 years ago
  29. OlderGamer

After EAs Origin push, and lack of Steam suport, I guess I will be getting mine on xb360.

    #29 4 years ago
  30. freedoms_stain

Right now graphical quality is not my biggest concern for BF3 on consoles, server quality IS.

If they follow the same pattern with BC2 we’ll all be forced to play on a handful of server locations of dubious quality with absolutely no connection indicators to tell you whether you or the people you’re playing against are appropriately ping matched.

At least on PC I’ll have the choice to play on servers located in the UK instead of Amsterdam or the US, with auto-kick features for KSA game wreckers with their gigantic pings.

    #30 4 years ago

Has no-one else seen this BF3 multiplayer footage?:

    #31 4 years ago
  32. reask

    It didn’t look very difficult.
He just stood there and reloaded whilst nothing happened.

    #32 4 years ago
  33. reask

LOL Giga that vid confirms to me everything I dont like about bf multi.
You spend 20 minutes running around and then some sniper/camper takes your head off.

How many hours of frustration in 1 I had with guys only concerned with there k/d ratio.

Good in theory but if you aint with a team forget about it.

    #33 4 years ago

Yeah… The guy takes ages to get to the subway station, then after getting taken out by an RPG, has to run all the way back there to catch back up with the action again.

They even obviously edited out all the junk in between where you have to choose where you want to spawn, then wait until you spawn, etc.

It’s certainly not my cup of tea, either.

    #34 4 years ago
  35. DrDamn

Or you can just spawn on a squad mate if possible – like someone did right in front of him in the subway. It’s this sort of thing which *attracts* me to the BF games over something like CoD. It encourages and gets better with team work, and as I would normally play with enough friends to fill a squad or two then that’s good for me.

    #35 4 years ago
  36. Lounds

This map is way too big and is being played with probs 24players, it would suit 64 players.

    #36 4 years ago
  37. OlderGamer

    @35 +1

    #37 4 years ago
  38. DSB

@35 That’s really not a very good spawn mechanic. There’s zero guarantee that the guy you’re spawning on isn’t going to get hit by an RPG, or a barrage of machinegun fire the second you pop.

In Project Reality for BF2 you have the opportunity to build your own spawnpoints by working together. That’s actual teamwork.

It takes nothing in the way of teamwork to click and spawn on top of a squadmate, and it’s slightly weird that a soldier somehow allows for a metaphysical connection that allows his buddies to pop out of thin air next to him.

    #38 4 years ago
  39. reask

The tsp system in kz3 isn’t bad.
Mind you maps for the most part are reasonably small.

    #39 4 years ago
  40. DrDamn

It’s slightly weird your in the Iranian border shooting people in the face with pretend guns trying to “capture” areas of the map by just standing next to flag for a bit isn’t it? It’s a game mechanic and it works nicely. The spawn on squad mate is a risk/reward mechanic.

It takes teamwork to talk to your squad and realise your the last one left standing and get to a place of safety so your squad can spawn on you.

    #40 4 years ago
  41. DrDamn

They had spawn point grenades in KZ2 didn’t they? Did they survive for KZ3?

    #41 4 years ago

    @ DSB:

Indeed. The only ‘teamwork’ you need for that spawn system is “Don’t die, don’t die! I’m gonna spawn on you!” lol.

    @ DD:

Yeah, you can spawn on other people, but you still need to go to the class select/spawn options screen, which takes a while. It’s not that much of a biggie, but I just peronally find it an unnecessary extra delay, when all I want to do is get right back to the front line.

    #42 4 years ago

Team Fortress 2 has the ‘safest’ spawn system IYAM.

    #43 4 years ago
  44. DSB

@40 Well you can always make that argument, but jumping far ahead on the battlefield, without being penalized for dying in terms of actually having to move again just strikes me as too convenient.

To me it just seems like an easy way to avoid making a proper spawn system.

“Just let ‘em spawn on top of eachother – A penny saved is a penny earned!”

Fair enough if you’re able to coordinate with your friends, that makes up for sloppy design in almost any game, but the vast majority of BC2 players don’t have that privilege. On its own the game does very little to encourage teamwork beyond merely throwing packs around, welding vehicles, or stabbing people with syringes, all of which triggers big bright points on the screen.

Sure, it provides an element of buffing that you don’t have in games like CoD, but it still tries to make just as much of a points whore out of you as any kill/death ratio. Simply buffing people isn’t teamwork. Compare it to the command structure in BF2, which neccessitated actual cooperation, and you’re essentially talking about two entirely different philosophies.

Alright Battlefield 3 looks good. I can’t wait for this game to come out xD

I watched the vid giga posted and I got bored :/ , this game is so not my type

    #47 4 years ago
  48. xino

the graphics….feels like Bad Company 2 but with better colour

the interactions in BF3 is scripted.
like pulling the dead body with directional down looks very scripted:/

i wonder how much the show pays those devs to show their games exclusive for the show:/

  49. galaxy366

Sick! :D Kotick is probably panicking now…

But I’m still going to get it for the PC ^^

  51. The Evil Pope

PS3 looks shit compared to the PC version. The 360 won’t be any different.

    #51 4 years ago
  52. M. K.

@49: Ehm, why? It looks exactly like the CoD campaign, that’s what DICE wanted, attract people who also want to play an action based campaign. I guess he’s really happy, that the great Battlefield devs are influenced by “his” game.

  53. OrbitMonkey

@51 Obvious troll states the obvious….*Yawn*

Holy shit, if that’s the PS3 version………..looking forward to BF3 knocking COD off it’s high horse this fall.

    #54 4 years ago
  55. sg1974

@54 No hope. Put CoD on a dog shit and it will still sell and review better. But who cares, BF3 owners will get a better game by the looks of things.

    #55 4 years ago
  56. Erthazus

for the PS3 version looks actually good. I’m even surprised.

but if i will start comparing this to the PC version… then ugh… PC version is:

64 players, 1080p, 60 fps, Direct X11, better shadows, better textures, lightning.. Everything and etc.

    You can’t even compare.

PS: Sorry guys, back for 3 minutes. I’m in Budapest/Hungary at hotel. Trolls need a vacation too you know. Good luck everyone and have a nice summer time. Just checking news.

    #56 4 years ago
  57. Noodlemanny

I have to say it does look oh so brilliantly better on PC. Particle effects make all the difference. Having said that I’m still gonna get it on console regardless and I won’t care one little bit… I’ll just get it on PC too.

    #57 4 years ago
  58. Uncontested

Still want it on PC… even tho I’m gonna need a brand new rig to play this monster..
