Mafia II banned in UAE

Monday, 6th September 2010 14:50 GMT By Johnny Cullen

mafia II

MEGamers is reporting that Mafia II has been in the United Arab Emirates, although no reason was given as to why.

The game is the latest to join the ranks of those refused sale in the country, including Darksiders, Heavy Rain, God of War III and even Dragon Age 2 next year, according to the site.

Sympathies, etc.

  1. Crysis

wonder if they got GTA IV though

    #1 4 years ago
  2. El_MUERkO

Should what’s banned in the UAE really be considered News?

You might as well say it’s banned in Myanmar and North Korea too.

    #2 4 years ago
  3. Gekidami

This would have been banned for its nudity i assume, banned for the same reason as HR; Mafia 2 has bewbs in it!

    #3 4 years ago
  4. Amir Mirzaee

So please give me the rights to pirate this…. Because I’m not going to import THIS from another country. (I’ve imported God Of War III and Heavy Rain and I’ll import DA2 too, but not Mafia)
    I wish I could live somewhere else….

    #4 4 years ago
  5. PsychoPCG

We had the same stupid situation for GTA IV and RDR as well.
But you don’t really need to “import” them. They all can be found around.

    #5 4 years ago
  6. TraceableX

If this game gets banned in UAE; this means it will be banned in Saudi Arabia automatically.

Reason: adult scenes/pics aren’t allowed in Muslim countries. Although it is nothing in many Muslim countries. As PsychoPCG said, you can find those banned games easily but expensive a bit.

Source: I’m Muslim – from Saudi Arabia.

    #6 4 years ago
  7. A4-F8

Haha Imagine if libya aswell will banned this game

    #7 4 years ago

    @ TraceableX:

As salaamu alaikum akhi. Could you please tell me how much a laptop like a Toshiba Qosmio X500 would cost in Saudi? Also, what is the best console for online gaming there? Will I be put in laggy European servers all the time on xbox Live?

    Jazakallahu khair.

    What the fuck ever :P

I make fun of the way Swedish people talk too. That hardly means I think they’re an inferior race.

Although, really, I do. Goddamn berrypickin’ mountain monkeys. With their blonde hair. And indestructible cars. Grrrr, I hate them so much.

    #17 4 years ago
  18. DarkElfa

@2, Damn, you stole my sarcasm. ;)

    @12, HA! That was awesome.

That said, being that seemingly every Islamic country in the wold is in a race to see who can ban Blackberry first, news like this comes as no surprise.

My question is this, Do Muslims not like having the right to choose what they see and here for themselves? What gives?

    #18 4 years ago
  19. Michael O’Connor

@18 Based on the comments in this thread so far, it’s pretty obvious that those outdated laws are very easy to get around.

I’m sure nobody likes it, but what can you really do about it? It’s easier to just circumvent the system.

    #19 4 years ago
  20. The Hindle

Its obvious that most Islamic countries never really moved past the 13th Century, i mean Homosexuality is punishable by death that sums it up really.

    #20 4 years ago
  21. Gekidami

Every Islamic country got past the 13th century. They just went back there in the 50′s and never came back.

    #22 4 years ago
  23. PsychoPCG

It’s funny how some of you comment about “EVERY Islamic country” like you’ve lived in all of them and know every little detail.
It’s not about the country and its people, it’s about the ruling system of the country.
The way you judge Islamic countries is like considering Americans and their stupid government at the same level.
    and agreed with Michael btw

    #23 4 years ago

All I want to know is some basic information about buying a laptop and how XBL is in Saudi Arabia…

Can anyone give me an answer without feeling the irresistable urge to attack entire nations of people?

    #24 4 years ago
  25. Michael O’Connor

    @23 Thank you.

It’s not the people that are outdated. It’s the ruling government.

    #25 4 years ago
  26. DSB

    @25 That’s true and false.

My family lived in Saudi Arabia for 4 years, and some things were arguably very primitive. Like not being allowed to point a camera at villagers because they thought it would take their souls. Or families tying an iron ball around the leg of their mentally handicapped son, so he wouldn’t stray very far from the village.

There are even places in Turkey where they paint all doors and windows blue to ward off curses. I’ve seen it myself.

The real story, at least the one I got, is that you can get along with all those people as long as you look beyond those differences. Most people generally want to move ahead and make things better.

This is a horribly lame conversation to have on a site like this though.

  28. Crysis

From my perspective, the Arabic laws such as the ones in Saudi Arabia are dead wrong, being sexist & racist, humans are all equal & law should not dictate otherwise & many punishments are barbaric & don’t fit the crime, not attempting to offend anyone, but these are just my views, then again i do not know much about this situation in these Arabic countries, but from what i’ve heard they’re being run by ignorant politics, who care only for themselves.
Without proper & fair leadership, terrorist groups will continue to expand

    #28 4 years ago
  29. Michael O’Connor

@26 There’s always going to be exceptions to the rule, and people stuck in the old ways.

My point is that they’re not the majority, and I think once this generation starts becoming the prominent one, a lot of that stuff will slowly begin to disappear.

Like you said, most people want to move ahead.

    #29 4 years ago
  30. DSB

@31 I wasn’t making an argument beyond cooperation being possible in spite of differences. My experience with people from those areas does point to a lot of superstition and fairly primitive thinking.

I’ve been friends with somalis who seriously believed in witchcraft and pakistanis, who spent hundreds of dollars obsessively calling a soothsaying service in Pakistan, like it was the most sensible thing in the world. That’s arguably a far cry from anyone else I know.

There’s a big difference between growing up in an enlightened humanist society and an authoritarian theocracy, a feudal warring society or an oppressive dictatorship. That’s just fact.

On the other hand I’ve spoken to a lot of underground metalheads in Iran through a friend, who all thought pretty much the same way I did.

    #30 4 years ago
  31. PsychoPCG

@26 This is a ridicules argument.
These so called “people/villagers” can be found anywhere.
It has nothing to do with being Islamic or any other religion out there.
We’re talking about the majority of people, not some people far from any civilized place.

    #31 4 years ago
  32. The Hindle

There is no arabic laws, its called Shia Law and its not the governments that enforce it, its the Qoran and there are muslims in the United Kingdom, France all over the world that follow this 13th century law.

    #32 4 years ago
  33. Amir Mirzaee

@25 I can’t call what those countries have Government. They’re rapist. People are not outdated, it’s the politicians. People want to living in today’s world, but the government won’t let them.

    @30 Why?

    #33 4 years ago

    @ 30:

    Yes indeed.

Can Amir Mirzaee be perma banned, please?

    #34 4 years ago
  35. freedoms_stain

    Sharia law, Shia is different.

    #35 4 years ago
  36. PsychoPCG

@32 The Sharia law is not enforced to those Muslims living outside Islamic countries.
He can find Mafia 2 in every gaming store in his country and decide if he wants to see the inappropriate content in it or not.
So that’s kind of different in comparison.

    @33 I’m sensing you’re Iranian.

    #36 4 years ago
  37. Amir Mirzaee

Why Should I be banned? It’s a free world. Do you know what Liberty means?

    #39 4 years ago

So this thread is now about bashing Islam…

    @8 G1GAHURTZ:

    Walikum alslam :)
I have no idea. But in general, laptop prices are high in SA. If you gonna buy one, don’t do it in SA.

Most people buy a PS3 for online gaming, and the same people buy a 360 for offline gaming (pirated games).
For online games, you should get region 2, cause that region is for middle-east countries.

@19: you’re sure…but I like Islamic laws, if people don’t like it they won’t keep it, I guess.

    #43 4 years ago

@42 Hating Arabs and loving Hitler are racist? (And that’s totally because you’re an Arab yourself. I’m sure if I take out that Arab thing and left loving of Hitler there, then you don’t have anything to say.)

Huh, it is funny to me when you said “I’m sure nobody likes it”.

I’m sure that Jews like Hitler.

@Amir Mirzaee: I think you’re one of those brainwased people, “oh looooool, muslims suck, they live with outdated laws”.
Just grow up a bit and try to respect people.

@26: what you have said have nothing to do with Islamic laws. You can find ignorant people everywhere, in every nation.

    #61 4 years ago
  62. onlineatron

    What’s involved in that?

Do you have to have prior teaching experiencing, degrees, etc or is it just a ‘yo, I can speak english, they can’t, let me help’ kinda deal?

    #62 4 years ago
  63. DSB

Don’t you just love those conversations where a guy comes out of nowhere and is like “Hey, I love Hitler, he’s my idol. Racism is awesome”.

That’ll just brighten up any sort of topic.

@61 I wasn’t talking about Islamic laws at all. I wasn’t even judging it. I don’t see how it’s my business how anyone runs their country. I’m just saying those societies work in a profoundly different way.

You usually need a minimum of a degree and a teaching qualification like a CELTA.

I thought the British people were pretty annoying when I was there.

I got on a bus, and the busdriver was like “Owight?” (Alright?) and I was like “Alright what? What are you getting at?” and he was like “Are yew owight?” (Are you alright?) and I was like “Well yeah, why wouldn’t I be? Am I limping or what?” And the guy was like “It’s a common greetin’ mate” and I was just like “Dude, you guys are retarded”.

I thought only the Irish were supposed to throw riddles at you for no particular reason.

    #77 4 years ago

proper australian accent can be sexy, it’s rare. im autralian, but the english here is pretty broken, like the british. only americans pronounce their words correctly. for example, the word propper, americans will pronounce the er at the end, while australians will say propa.

    #97 4 years ago

our accents differ by states aswell tho, Sydney folk will pronounce tomato, tmoayto while us South Aussies will pronounce it tomarto & those from Sydney generally sound like they have a blocked nose, while us South Aussies speak with a generally deeper tone.
Also, we do often say, G’day, Mate & cheers, but i HATE how the Americans’ make us sound.
Listen to Hugh Jackman & that’s how we generally speak, though you can feintly hear the blocked nose nasaly sound from him
