Alan Wake for PC canned, confirms Microsoft

Alan Wake 4

Microsoft’s confirmed to VG247 that Alan Wake for PC has been canned.

Earlier, Strategy Informer reported the company canceled the Remedy thriller for the platform

The statement given to the site said:

Some games are more suited for the intimacy of the PC, and others are best played from the couch in front of a larger TV screen. We ultimately realised that the most compelling way to experience “Alan Wake” was on the Xbox 360 platform, so we focused on making it an Xbox 360 exclusive. Both Microsoft and Remedy have long histories in PC game development. This decision was about matching this specific game to the right platform.

Microsoft’s just confirmed to us that is indeed the case.

The game got confirmed for a release on 360 last night at X10. It’ll release in the US on May 18 and May 21 in the UK.

New trailer and screens are here and here.

this why pc gamers hateconsoles. By the way I am not suptisred because they had already said they were not making the game.

when remedy goes bankuprt I am sure a lot of pc gamers will remeber.

This only proves my point about mircosoft. You can expect an increase in hate towards consoles. Don’t be suprise when them console get more pirated and hacked too.

by the way there is alot of pc games buy I am not worried

    #31 5 years ago

must pc gamers knew the game would garbage and microsoft does not care alot time ago

    proof here

so it’s no suprise and it’s the very reason I was ans still is trashing talking them losers.

why get ur panties in a twist over something you don’t even want huh?

this is the kind of company mainstreams media supports.

    #36 5 years ago
  37. Yoshi

@34 If anyone thinks pc gamers are dumb they are very mistaken. PC gamers have to know how to upgrade/install/update, what do console users have to know? How to click a simple button that says ‘Update’ and then it updates the whole system, on pc its not that easy. You have motherboard, gfx card, mouse, sound drivers. Then you have the operating system to update. PC is more likely to mess up if you dont know what your doing, with consoles a baby could update it XD

    #37 5 years ago
  38. blackdreamhunk

I am looking at bankuprt console game devs, remedy better pray that alan wake does not flop. If they do they are going to be with out a job.

  62. Kalain

This comes down to two things: 360 Exclusivity and money. It’s that simple. The 360 appears to have less exclusives than the PS3. I say appears because I@m not going to dig for information on it. In order to achieve that exclusivity, they canned the PC version. Not to sure if remedy are owned by MS now or not, i’m sure someone will say so on here.

As for money, game devs and publishers want your money and they want it now, not over a duration. They move to the consoles because they can get that instant money a lot better than what they can on the PC. First party developers can get help for PR from the console manufacturers for hyping the game up, and wham.. cash in pocket for some lucky chap or chapette. PC’s on the other hand can achieve those sales, just takes a lot long to get there.

Besides, why advertise a game on a 360 when it’s coming out on the PC, with better visuals/quality/performance and at a cheaper price point as well?

you want to bet a lot of people are not going to buy infinty ward games agin

I am sure right about 11 000 and more game devs going bankuprt. I am so good I was right about ubisoft!

we pc gamers should remeber all the game devs that hate us, so that we don’t support them once they lose their jobs. I am sure some of them when they lose their jobs they will want to come to the indie seen.

now that’s power and news travels fast.

Yeah, I’d take that bet. In fact, I’d happily throw down £1000 with a bookie right now that Modern Warfare 3 will do 10m+

Not that they’d be crazy enough to take the bet on anything other than virtually even odds.

Many seem to be dismissing this as transparent white-washing, little more than a lame excuse. And who knows, maybe it is just that.

But for what it’s worth, I don’t disagree with them; I game both on PC and on consoles (360 and PS3), and I whole-heartedly agree that individual games are more often than not suited to one platform more than the others, and not just the platform itself but the environment and context that the user experiences that platform in. Civilization and RTS games will always be PC-bound experiences for me, while for my money, the likes of action games such as GTA or Prototype should definately be enjoyed sprawled out in front of my big TV. (RPG’s I’m torn on; I’ll play them on anything. DA:O was PC for me, whilst ME is xbox through and through. Oblivion I played on both!)

The right gaming experience is a vital factor for me, which often makes picking one for multi-platform titles a bit of a bitch at times, but it’s usually a pretty clear decision, depending on the type of game in question.

Whether that’s the case or not with Alan Wake, I guess we’ll never know. And as I said at the start, maybe this announcement is pure PR damage control, but even if that is the case, it doesn’t necessarily make it untrue.

I agree with you on some of your points, but I can happily play my PC games sprawled across my living floor on the 32″ TV I have there. The reason they give is just a poor excuse.

Alan wake was meant to be the spiritual succesor to Max Payne and Max Payne was very successful on the platform it was developed on, so much so that they could spend a lot of time on Alan wake.

No, this is just MS wanting a game to be a 360 exclusive through and through. If it wasn’t, then they would see a massive drop in it’s sales on their console.

Again, it’s just about exclusivness and money, nothing more.

    #86 5 years ago
  87. thejackal

I agree with you 100%. I can’t play my PC on the larger TV but I happily have the consoles and PC to play the games I want to play. Canceling a port for the PC just to make the 360 exclusive that they want will certainly involve losing plenty of sales, including mine. I don’t have a 360 and am in no real rush to pick one up. If they’re hoping that exclusive games might help to drive the new purchases of their consoles, then I can help send a message (with others) by not buying the game. I supported Remedy before and would love to do so again, but not when choices like this are made.

@86 Hmm, I’m not sure where you’re getting “spiritual successor” from. Max Payne (and sequel) is balls to the wall, bloody minded, heavily stylised arse-whooping action from start to finish, whilst Alan Wake seems more of a mystery game much more reliant on atmosphere and emotion. Which is not to say that Max lacked atmosphere and emotion; it had both, but the two franchises have always seemed very disticntly different to me, although recent trailers for Alan have made it seem more action focused than it previously seemed, granted.

But that’s neither here nor there, and has little bearing on the xbox-only issue.

  104. The Juice707

Wow, the comments on this article blow my mind. I knew console fanboys had some pretty nasty arguments, but I didn’t know PC gamers were like this.

Unlike some companies do, at least Remedy didn’t play it off like it was the Xbox 360′s power that made it exclusive, but that the experience was more suited for consoles. I don’t think anybody believes that this completely justifies the PC version getting canned, but the money does! But it isn’t just greed though. It is no secret that millions and millions of dollars worth of software are pirated on PC’s every year, and it costs more money to develop a game on 2 platforms over one. It would have been a risk for Microsoft and Remedy where as the 360 version will almost more than likely garner large sales. It isn’t a conspiracy for Microsoft to destroy their own PC platform as a space for gaming! Sure, they haven’t exactly tried to promote PC gaming like they have Xbox gaming, but that is because that is what the Xbox is specifically for! It is a controlled platform- it reduces piracy- it is good for them, and good for the industry.

blackdreamhunk can post links upon links here, but guess what dude- None of them matter! And if you refuse to buy a console, then that doesn’t matter either. You may be making a statement, but the people you are directing it at don’t give a shit because they are playing console games and having fun doing so. They aren’t having to upgrade their systems every year. It is a system that works better for people who don’t have several hundreds of dollars to spend on upgrading every time their’s are outdated, so don’t insult console gamers and the developers who make their games. Throw your money where you want, and I’ll throw mine where I want regardless of your strong opinions.

Ignorance doesn’t ever make people want to agree with you. It makes them oppose you.

It is true, I have never been much of a PC gamer. But I wasn’t trying to say that everything you said was without merit. But you aren’t really considering the simple aspect of “preference.” I would rather play a game on a console, and there are tons of people out there just like me. You know it and I know it and the big companies know it to. They are watching out for their own asses and trying to turn a profit. If they think the best way for the business to operate is to cancel a game for PC and focus on its console counterpart, then that is fine. It is their business, and they don’t owe you or me or anyone else a damn thing. Either you give them money or not. You know?

    #108 5 years ago
  109. The Juice707

You are 100% right, but I meant in comparison to PC. You can’t deny that PC piracy is much more readily available and accessible on the PC. The general audience of the console crowd wouldn’t be pirating games, only those with the knowledge and know how.

Also console games get pirated a lot faster than pc gaming does. pirated don’t make money off of pc games. I will even say that game devs lose more money on consoles with high production costs, rented games, used game market and piracy.

Maybe other systems are getting pirated, but do they still not stand as more profitable platforms than PC?

Other than that, all I can say is once again that it is all business choice. They look for the path with the most profits and benefits. They don’t look at you and say “Haha, that guy plays games on PC, let’s screw him.” What does your argument even stand for? That big companies are “lairs” (I assume you are meaning liars… can’t believe you have misspelled it every time you have used the word)? Big companies look out for themselves and their profits.

Does anyone but BDH care? I mean I’m a big PC fanboy and I can see that their statement saying it doesn’t match the PC as a platform is just PR fluff, but clearly they didn’t want to make a PC game and forcing them to port the game and doing a hack job of it would annoy me more.

To be honest, I’ve kinda hit a stage where I’m just sick of PC/Console game hybrids because 90% of the time one or both platforms suffer in some way, so if a dev just wants to make a console game out and out then good for them, because I know if I go out and buy it on the 360 I know I wont be getting a shit version or vice versa on the PC.

Anyone saying a game is shit because it’s not coming to the PC is a fucking idiot though.

Thanks Juice, I know what you mean though, stuff like FEAR. The first one was a PC game and the console version just wasn’t up to scratch, and then FEAR 2 was a weird halfway point between PC and console and seemed to irk both camps at some level.

It was never a big issue in the past when console game was more Japan centric and the PC and console were so massively different in terms of architecture and power than going cross platform back then just didn’t work. And whilst it sort of does now, it still doesn’t feel right and poor ports from one of the other seem to hurt everyone. I think it was poor console ports that hurt the PC the most rather than not having x y z games.
