New PS5 firmware brings an update for the DualSense controller [Update]

This week brings us a new firmware update on PS5.

Sony has just released the latest firmware update for all PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide. The update, version 20.02-02.30, comes in at the usual size of 868MB.

Sony initially didn't say specifically what this update fixes, and elected to once again use the classic "this system update improves system performance" as the only official patch note. However, a little while after the release of the new firmware, we actually got a proper set of patch notes. Here they are:

  • Resolved an issue where data transfers and downloads were cancelled when trying to download content while a data transfer from a PS4 is in progress.
  • Some issues that were causing errors during text input in some PS4 games have been resolved.
  • The connection stability has been improved for some Wi-Fi routers.

There is one other interesting thing about update 20.02-02.30. Unlike recent firmware releases, this one brings some updates to the DualSense controller. The installation screen will prompt you to plug your controller into the console to get it updated. That said, it's not clear what changes Sony made to the DualSense, but it is rare that PlayStation controllers get firmware updates, so it could be something to do with connectivity or battery life.

As always, your PS5 should automatically download and install the update, and you can force by simply going online.
