Don't expect Assassin's Creed games on PS3 and Xbox 360 games after next year

Assassin's Creed fans beware: Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot isn't keen on producing PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games for much longer.

The PS3 and Xbox 360's lifetimes are running out, the executive said in a new interview.

“What we see is that this year is still fine for the PS3 and 360," he told GameInformer.

"But next year because they are selling very quickly, we’ll move to the new hardware. After 2015, it will be hard for us to create games for those systems.”

We had expected the PS3 and Xbox 360 to linger a little longer than that, as they both have huge install bases. Last generation, the PS2 especially held on for years.

But it sounds like that's not the case, and apparently because next-gen is doing so well. While the Xbox One is only just ramping up to catch up to it, the PS4 has gone gangbusters, selling 10 million units already and setting a new hardware record for Sony.

Although EA Sports will probably hold on longer than other brans, we can probably take Guillemot's words as a fair indication of how the industry will trend. Ubisoft is pretty savvy about hardware; it's always on board new launches but it gets out while the getting's good.

Speaking of which, Guillemot said the Wii U is pretty much dead in the water in terms of multi-platform triple-A releases. Watch Dogs is the only "mature game" Ubisoft intends to bring to the system, he revealed.

"What we see is that Nintendo customers don’t buy Assassin’s Creed. Last year, we sold in very small numbers," he said.

“What we see is that they are very interested in Just Dance, very interested by other kinds of games. So what we are trying to do is to focus more on the types of games they are interested in.”
