How to Earn XP and Level up in Ni no Kuni 2

XP is everything in Ni no Kuni 2. Since there’s absolutely nothing to stop you running into incredibly strong, overpowered enemies while you’re out exploring the open world, you’re going to have to start levelling up every single character that you journey around the game with.

You’ll obviously gain XP points for every enemy you defeat through combat, and you’ll also gain XP points for all the quests you complete in Ni no Kuni 2, whether they’re simple side quests, or main story quests that focus on Evan building up his new kingdom. No matter which combination of three characters you choose to head into battle with in the game, every single playable character will earn XP from each battle, even if they didn’t actually partake in the battle itself.

However the one note with this XP sharing is that the character you choose to play as will always earn more XP than the other characters in your party, since XP is given out based on each enemy you defeat, and so if you’re more active than the AI-controlled characters, you’re obviously going to earn yourself more XP than them. To counter this, and make sure all your party members stay at roughly the same level as one another, we’d recommend switching between the characters you play as in Ni no Kuni 2 fairly often.

How to Switch Characters in Ni no Kuni 2

To switch characters in Ni No Kuni 2, head into the ‘Party’ section of the Ni no Kuni 2 pause menu, and you’ll see a list of every playable character in the game. Note that the top three characters are the ones you’ll be taking into battle, and any characters below will be left on the sidelines. To change the order around, simply select on a character and then move them with the left analog stick, but note that the character at the top of the list is the ‘leader’ of the party, and it’s this character that you’ll actually be playing as in battle and while you’re exploring. The only exception to this character switching is when a story quest dictates that you play as Evan or Roland, but otherwise you’re free to switch between characters at your will, earning maximum XP for them through battle.
