Halo 5: Guardians uses variable resolution technique to maintain 60fps

Halo 5: Guardians developer 343 has went into detail about a few technical aspects of the game.

When Halo 5: Guardians comes out in October, it will not have a fixed rendering resolution like most games. Instead, the game will dynamically switch resolutions to keep the frame-rate locked to 60.

"60fps gameplay is supported by a new progressive resolution system that allows us to dynamically scale the resolution at which we render the game (up to 1080p) based on the needs of the scene," 343 explained.

"In much of the campaign you may be playing at 1080p, but when we want to get really crazy with vehicles, visual effects and combat we can trade some of the resolution in order to maintain the crucial 60fps."

343 added that without this system, it would've needed to either reduce the scale of the campaign missions or lower the quality of assets across the board. The resolution scaling system achieves the best of both worlds, according to 343.

Dynamic or otherwise, there's no denying the game looks good.

Halo 5: Guardians is out October 27 on Xbox One.
