Is the trend of online only games coming to Gran Turismo?

GT Sport may not include an offline career mode

Gran Turismo Sport is certainly not claiming to be the next fully-fledged Gran Turismo sequel, but it looks like there may be no offline campaign mode.

If this is the case, it won't necessarily be a total surprise, given that it's not a sequel, and taking into account the comments from series director Kazunori Yamauchi, who said, "The old days, when the games were offline, the experience was defined by what’s on the disc. You had a distinction between a Prologue and a full GT, it was very stark. When the game becomes more of an online connected experience, that distinction blurs. This will be much more than a Prologue type experience."

An experience geared towards online play wouldn't be unique by any means.

The news comes from the GTPlanet forums where a number of slides breaking down the campaign mode don't seem to cover an offline career mode.

The campaign is split into Beginner's School made up of driving lessons, a Circuit Experience which appears to be a mode for familairising yourself with the tracks, Mission Challenge that requires you to meet the goal of whatever the specific challenge is, and Racing Etiquette that bestows the valuable teachings of sportsmanship.

Sports Mode is online multiplayer, so where has the offline career mode gone? Will it be missed in a 'GT Lite' experience?

Obviously we should wait for confirmation before drawing any conclusions, but would this terrible news, or just par for the course given the way games in other genres are going?

Chime in below.
