Elex sci-fantasy from Piranha Bytes gets new website, screens, and info

Elex is an upcoming 'science-fantasy' action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic mash-up of sci-fi mechs and fantasy magic.

The premise on the site explains how a technologically advanced civilisation on the planet of Magalan had a bit of bad luck in the form of a meteor that brought a new element with it - Elex. This limited resource introduced magic to the world and can also be used to power machines. Survivors must use technology and magic to survive and rebuild the world. So no pressure then.

The open world consists of five regions that are accessible from the outset, allowing for a huge amount of exploration from the get-go. The only potential obstacles are the "mutant creatures that live in Magalan’s Elex polluted landscapes. Walk, run, or punch your jetpack into action, if you can see it, you can reach it."

When it comes to combat, the developers boast that the game "offers one of the widest selection of weaponry in the history of role-playing." Weapons range from swords, bows, and axes, to shotguns, flamethrowers, and plasma rifles, and that's before you've even touched the magic system.

The good news is you won't be constricted to playing classes. You can win over mentors who will teach you the skills you want to cultivate. Teachers aren't the only ones you have to sweet talk, as the way you interact with NPCs will have consequences. So feel free to p**s off everyone if you like, but there will be repercussions.

Your character starts their journey after crashing their glider in the mountains and experiencing the mother of all come-downs.

"Being raised as an Alb and fed pure Elex to strengthen your body and to be free from emotion, you lived in a world of cold logic and military discipline. Set to rise through the ranks, a scourge to your enemies, your destiny seemed sure. Now, as the smoke rises over the wreckage of your glider in the mountains of Edan, you are trapped far from Xacor. With no access to pure Elex, you are experiencing emotions for the first time in your life. Stranded amongst your enemies, outcast from your people, you must find a new course, you must decide how your life can decide the fate of the world."

I love sci-fi, fantasy, and RPGs, so it'll be interesting to see how a mish-mash of the two genres pans out. You can peruse some screens of the game below.

Elex will be coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One. A release date has yet to be confirmed.
