EEDAR issued a statement post NPD statement proclaiming that although Wii figures didn't hit the expected 3 million mark, it doesn't mean to say that demand for Nintendo's family console is slowing down.

"These Wii figures are not any indication that is demand slowing down," said the PR mail.

"The Nintendo Wii is going through supply just as quick as they have before and these numbers merely reflect the large disparity between supply and demand. We still believe the Nintendo Wii would have sold north of 4 million units have supply and demand been in equilibrium."

First, it appears our projections for the Nintendo Wii in December missed the mark. Projections are always a complex task; one significant factor for the Wii in our December calculations was examining previous hardware trends. These indicated that the Wii, particularly in lieu of the holiday season and historical December trends, would outperform its November number by a significant margin. Clearly, that did not actually turn out to be the case.

These Wii figures are not any indication that is demand slowing down. The Nintendo Wii is going through supply just as quick as they have before and these numbers merely reflect the large disparity between supply and demand. We still believe the Nintendo Wii would have sold north of 4 million units have supply and demand been in equilibrium.

All of our previous analysis on Nintendo in our most recent December Retail Sales Preview is correct. We still believe that Nintendo, with its Wii and DS install base, were the main catalysts behind protecting our industry from seeing the full wrath of the recession in late 2008.

Of course, I will note that EEDAR was the closest in their estimates for overall software, we only missed by 1%. We hope to deliver another great and accurate month next time and hopefully we can finally nail those Wii figures.
