Alice: Otherlands Kickstarter launches as Spicy Horse tries to gain movie rights

Alice: Otherlands developer Spicy Horse has launched a Kickstarter to acquired the film rights to the fairytale series, with a view to creating a series of animated shorts.

The campaign comes as Spicy Horse founder American McGee cancelled the studio's failing OZombie Kickstarter drive. In this statement he explained that the window for securing the Alice film rights was closing fast so he had to choose between projects, suggesting OZombie may return at some point.

McGee emailed VG247 this morning to update us on the Alice: Otherlands project, which has so far raised $25,585 of its $200,000 goal with 19 days left.

The statement reads, "Ready for another trip down the rabbit hole? "Alice: Otherlands" will explore the subconscious beauty and horror lurking within the minds of some of London's most imaginative writers, inventors and artists. Presented as a series of computer animated shorts, these adventures will form a prelude to Alice's larger debut on the big screen.

"Your support of the just-launched Kickstarter campaign will help make this dream a reality."

The project will start as a series of animated shorts, with a view to creating a feature length movie that sees Alice entering the 'Wonderlands' inside the minds of other people, including Vincent Van Gogh. Check out this concept art of his world:

I interviewed McGee on the Alice: Otherlands plot here, and he explained that Alice will delve into people's minds as a way of saving orphaned children from the rapid industrialisation of London. It's a dark story as usual, and the mind worlds smack positively of Double Fine's Psychonauts.
