3DS, Mario Kart 7 top 2011 Japanese charts

Media Create figures have shown Nintendo dominated 2011 with monster sales of 3DS and Mario Kart 7.

The figures, published by 4Gamer, show 3DS sold 4.1 million units for the year between January 3, 2011 and January 1, 2012, with sales for December at 1.6 million units. The handheld launched in late February 2011 in Japan.

PSP came second for the year with 2.06 million units, followed by PS3 in third with 1.5 million units.

On software, Mario Kart 7 sold 1.16 million units to lead the way, followed by Super Mario 3D Land with 1.08 million copies. The top five is rounded off by Monster Hunter 3G for 3DS, Final Fantasy Type-0 on PSP and the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII-2.
