Rogue One writer Gary Whitta is writing Square Enix's Project Athia

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story screenwriter Gary Whitta recently announced that he will be leading the writing team for ones of Square Enix's upcoming games, the mysterious Project Athia.

As well as Rogue One, Whitta has worked as a writer on The Book of Eli, Star Wars Rebels, The Walking Dead, and much more. As of this week, he confirmed his involvement in upcoming PS5 console-exclusive Project Athia, where he will be spearheading the writing department. Despite being exclusive to PS5 on console, Project Athia will also be coming to PC.

Whitta originally made the announcement on Twitter in response to our friends at USgamer. You can check out the tweet below.

"Really proud to reveal that I led a crack team of A-list writers from the worlds of film, tv, games, and fantasy literature who helped create this immense new universe for Square Enix," writes Whitta. "Can't wait for you to see and learn more. Stay tuned."

Whitta was also quick to mention that this was not the big announcement he had apparently mentioned earlier that day, meaning that he's probably involved in another simultaneous writing project. How one man finds the time to write that much while still hosting an incredibly successful and heartening podcast in Animal Crossing is beyond me.

As for Project Athia itself, it's a breathtakingly gorgeous game that unfortunately we don't know very much about yet - but you can take a brief look at it, if you fancy. It's being developed by Luminous Productions, a subsidiary of Square Enix formed out of key developers who worked on Final Fantasy 15.

In related news, Gary Whitta wants to make a Star Fox movie after apparently being quite impressed with God of War art director Raf Grassetti's realistic Star Fox designs. Whitta also wants to make a movie adaptation of Remedy's Control - and Remedy is interested.
