Rocket League devs already know how to add cross-network multiplayer

Rocket League developer Psyonix had the technicality of cross-network multiplayer already figured out, it just needed policy changes.

Rocket League will be the first game to support cross-platform multiplayer between Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as soon as the legalities are all figured out.

Developer Psyonix had already locked down a technical solution for this to work.

"The only thing we have to do now is sort of find out where we stand politically with everyone, and then it's full steam ahead to finish the solution that we've already started," vice president Jeremy Dunham told Gamespot.

Dunham knowns the effect a dwindling number of players could have on the overall health of a game's community, and connecting everyone together is one way around that.

"There's this weird psychological thing that happens with people if you let them know that their community is small, even though they're enjoying the game and playing it.

"There's this weird effect where sometimes it encourages them to stop playing if they think nobody else is going to play with them, which creates a snowball effect where other people stop playing because they don't think anyone's going to play."

This also has the effect of making the process of releasing patches and other content updates easier, as the developers won't have to worry about removing certain features from some versions of the game.

Rocket League already supports cross-platform play between PC and PS4, and the upcoming spring patch will allow PC players to connect with Xbox One players.
