The Last of Us has a secret ending scene – and no, we’re not talking about Troy Baker’s musical performance. Spoilers ahead.

The Last of Us is all about story, so if you haven’t yet finished the game and plan to, please do yourself a favour and stop reading right now.

For those of you still on board, The Last of Us was the subject of a live theatre event this evening, which was by all accounts pretty special. As part of the presentation, Naughty Dog revealed an extra ending scene written by director Neil Druckmann.

As reported by NeoGAF users, Druckmann said the scene is a goodbye to Joel and Ellie; asked viewers not to record the scene; and said the scene will never be released in any form.

The scene is set four years after the end of the game, at Tommy’s dam. Joel enters Ellie’s room, where she is listening to music alone. He chats about Tommy’s plan to get Joel to marry a woman named Esther, but Ellie is distant.

Joel then surprises Ellie with the gift of a guitar, promising to teach her to play, and playing and singing a song for her. He tells her a joke, and they laugh together, less strained than before. After Joel leaves the room, Ellie tries the guitar herself.

MP1st noted a correlation between the deleted scene and a piece of fan art for the game by The Last of Us concept artist Marek Okon (above), which is interesting to say the least.

The scene comes in addition to Naughty Dog’s joke musical “alternate ending”, which you can watch on YouTube.

The live event was held to celebrate The Last of Us: Remastered’s release on PS4. It launches on July 29, which has now arrived in many territories; you can download it via the PSN already.

While nice, its hardly a big “secret” or even an important scene at all.

Characters are not developed further and are just trying to tug on our heartstrings once more. Now if Joel taught her how to swim, that would be another story.
