Streets of Rage 4 prototype rejected by Sega, series composer reveals

Monday, 7th January 2013 10:16 GMT By Dave Cook

Streets of Rage 4 is a game shrouded in mystery, rumour and misdirection. You may know that a leaked Dreamcast-era prototype surfaced online some ten years ago, but that the project never came to pass. Series composer Yuzo Koshiro has shed a little light on what happened.

Speaking at MAGFest 11 over the weekend, Koshiro was asked by Destructoid to discuss the soundtrack he would make for a modern Streets of Rage title.

Koshiro then explained that a prototype for Streets of Rage 4 has been developed but was subsequently canned by Sega. He hasn’t heard a peep on the matter since. We do know that the fabled Streets of Rage 4 prototype did go on in some form to form the basis of Core’s Fighting Force, a rather shit brawler on PSOne.

We do know that Scottish developer Ruffian Games – of Crackdown 2 fame – did create a prototype for a Streets of Rage revival that never saw the light of day, but leaked footage was unearthed late last year. Check out the gameplay here.

Would you like to see Streets of Rage 4 made a reality? If so, what form would it take and who would be your dream developer? Let us know below.

Thanks Nintendo Life.

If it’s anything like ‘The Warriors’ for PS2, i’m game. Spaghettimonster, i miss it. We need more games like it. Punching people was insanely fun.

Koshiro would have to do the music. The man is a beast.

@2 he’s such a legend. His Shinobi 3 soundtrack is blistering.

NO. Leave Streets of rage alone.
Most of the classic Mega Drive IP’s that got new games were bloody awful to put it mildly. Like altered beast, golden axe and of course sonic. The only thing not utterly shit that i can think of were the Shinobi games on PS2 but they were nothing spectacular either.

Streets of Rage 4 should remain 2D and sprite-based.
Sega should get Arc System Works to make it – thus guaranteeing it’s awesomeness.

Wasn’t FF Streetwise, Warriors, Fighting Force and the rest of that shit enough to realize Streets of Rage should be left alone?

I know they get brought up a lot, but I’d love to see a Platinum-developed Streets of Rage 4 that played like a multiplayer Godhand. The only thing is it would have to have Koshiro’s music. No Koshiro, no buy.

But the prototype that came out a few months ago seemed like a step in the right direction, even if I did seriously dislike the character designs.
