Remedied: Alan Wake PC breaks even within 48 hours

Monday, 20 February 2012 14:37 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Remedy has made its money back on the PC version of Alan Wake within 48 hours of it launching on Steam.

The keyboard and mouse version, which launched on Thursday, comes with multiple new features such as 3D and multi-screen, plus the inclusion of XBL DLC The Signal and The Writer.

“We are very happy with the sales and hitting #1 on Steam at launch was nothing short of amazing,” said Remedy’s Aki Järvilehto on its forums.

“We recouped our development and marketing expenses during the first 48 hours. And yes, we’re certainly very excited about PC.”

Remedy plans to launch a retail PC version of the thriller on March 2 in Europe via Nordic Games. Get our interview with studio franchise boss Oskari Hakkinen on the PC SKU and this week’s American Nightmare here.

    #17 3 years ago
  18. DSB

Straight up Stephen King can be hard enough to handle for some people – It’s like the Call of Duty of horror to me.

Copying Stephen King and obviously not doing it completely faithfully certainly doesn’t add to that.

The worst is the fact that it delivers the story in painfully small increments, and you’re always, always, always stuck in an identical, or at least nearly identical gameplay section. Nothing happens.

I love the forests, the settings, the axe murderers are cool, but after 20 minutes of it, it’s just not a biggy anymore. I’m running around dispatching them left and right and it’s more like an action game than anything else.

I can play it in the dead of night without looking over my shoulder even once.

If one thing’s important to a horror game it’s dosage and pacing. You have to deliver the story and the terror with care, and you have to keep it moving and escalating. That’s really where Alan Wake falls through for me.

The setting, the style and characters are great. The writing, the pacing and the way it’s put together is not.

@20 You don’t always, always, always have to read what I say, let alone care. It’s an opinion, you’re in a comment section, you’re going to be exposed to a few of those.

Life is full of nasty surprises like that I guess.

Anyway, if you love the game, good for you buddy. Don’t take everything you read so seriously. Or indeed feel free to tell me how wrong I am and why. That’s what this thing is for.

I really enjoyed Alan wake on Xbox, If your a fan of horror games, I highly recommend it. It’s not silent hill 2 scary, more creepy but can be very intense with firefights at night. No ammo, low battery, light in the distance while being chased by a ton of bad guys is alot of fun.

    #23 3 years ago
  24. DSB

@22 Right, I prefer to respond to people. Your post was a bit whiny and defensive, and I don’t see what it has to do with anything I wrote, but that’s your problem, not mine.

Oh yes, if there is one thing that gets that right, it’s Condemened. So unappreciated.

Totally agree with what you said, btw.

Might still buy it for PC, just to support a developer who actually cares about the community.

Mr. Wake, welcome to the mass market: less demanding, more casual than the original. New players will be eased into the world of Alan Wake and fans will surely enjoy the new Fight till Dawn mode in addition to having some loving memories on the original game.

  29. Da Man

Condemned had a clunky, routine combat with enemies you couldn’t avoid, whereas e.g. in Silent Hill you could’ve run from pretty much everyone. That game was unbearable, it was like playing a free for all playlist in a first person melee’er, only everyone decided to be against you.

    #29 3 years ago
  30. YoungZer0

    @29: So?

@27, Yeah I found Condemned a little disturbing… Really (dis)liked the section in a abandoned store, with the badguys wearing mannequin masks :-D

    #33 3 years ago
  34. Da Man

#31 So because I think the game is shit, and you think it isn’t I’m trolling?

See, I’ve just looked thru the Aw comments and saw this post about a tedious videogame I played a few years back, since I was rather surprised at your description, decided to reference it.

How about you fuck off if you aren’t interested. Why post a comment then call anyone disagreeing a troll? No Bayonetta /Metal gear Rising stories recently or something?

    #34 3 years ago
  35. YoungZer0

@33: Oh that store drove me nuts, i loved it. Condemned seems to be the only game where the enemies are human and still scary as hell. No Ghost Girls, no monsters, just people who went insane.

    #35 3 years ago
  36. Da Man

Next time you post some inane remark about a videogame I like, I’ll be sure to reply with an ‘SO?’ and call you a troll.

    #36 3 years ago
  37. fearmonkey

@29 – I have to disagree with you, I loved the original Condemned, the sequel was not as good but still fun.
It was definitely creepy and the combat was great.
In fact, I just bought both games over the weekend for under $14 so I could play again. I had rented them originally. I own the PC version of the original as well.
I would count condemned as one of my favorite 360 games in fact.

    #37 3 years ago
  38. Da Man

#37 I didn’t really like the idea of going through countless corridors while beating junkies with hammers, pieces of armature or whatnot, and with what was basically quick time events in place of ‘investigation’ parts. Rinse and repeat, only to see more junkies.

It was kind of like playing those tunnels from Fallout 3 with a melee weapon for hours.

    #38 3 years ago
  39. YoungZer0

@36: But that will never happen, because i don’t care about the games you like. If you’d read my comment, you’d see that there was no mention of the combat at all. So that’s my reply “So?”, meaning i don’t care. Meaning for me it doesn’t matter if i can or can not avoid combat.

    #39 3 years ago
  40. Da Man

#39 *cough* Wouldn’t it be more appropriate then to say that you didn’t mind going thru that pain in the arse because you were mesmerized by the atmosphere? (or something) Might as well say ‘No.’ anytime you want to point out something, I’m certain anyone will instantly understand you.

    Language barriers. Very unfortunate.

And I didn’t enjoy that atmosphere, I can play Condemned at the local construction site every evening, have some terrific attics around here as well.

    #40 3 years ago
  41. YoungZer0

@40: As i said before, you’re getting more and more tiresome. What makes you think i didn’t enjoy the combat? Every punch felt great. Never seen a FPS with more satisfying melee-combat.

Might be more appropriate to let other people talk instead of thinking you know what they have to say. Or do you enjoy having monologues?

    Better work on that.

Why even tell me what you didn’t like about Condemned? I certainly don’t care.

    #41 3 years ago
  42. Da Man

#41 Ah, so you’re just an idiot then.

Or just plain terrible at communicating. I see.

Obviously if I described combat (which was 80 percent of the game) as poor, that makes the game unplayable, hence I deem it bad. I don’t mind if someone like you enjoyed it (combat that is), that doesn’t make it more intriguing to me, especially when you can hardly elaborate on your opinion.

Pick up an Engrish book, buddy. Or attend some classes.

If you don’t ‘care’, why keep on arguing about it with me? Believe it or not, when someone like you makes a comment on the internet, others might discuss the game as a result. Seems like you ironically take everything as aimed at you. That’s too bad. Perhaps my advice from before to fuck off was correct after all.

  44. DSB

    @YoungZero (Mild spoilers)

I thought the exact same thing. “I wish this felt more like Condemned”.

There was really not much wrong with the mechanics, and I really liked the dodge system (felt a bit like Madden :P ) but there was never any reason to use it, and it’s just not the same fighting “shadows”.

How scary is a shadow in a forest that’s already completely dark? It’s not very well thought out. You expect shadows or monsters in a place like that, you don’t expect people.

I’d prefer a real person or more relatable threat, like you got in Condemned. The fact that they were junkies just further tapped into the nightmares of the average person, but rural mountain people wouldn’t be bad either.

I wish they had tried to make it their own instead of desperately aiming for Stephen King. I think Alan Wake would’ve been a lot better if they had gone for Mary Shelley or something like that instead.

I really don’t understand the need to repeat the scenario.

    Dark forest
    Run 15 meters
Three guys jump out from behind tree
    Run 15 meters
    Start generator
    Search building/area
Three guys jump out from behind tree

It’s a real waste of a beautiful, dark game.

  45. Maximum Payne

@44 But if they were real people whole light and possessed mechanics wouldn’t be there.

    #45 3 years ago
  46. DSB

@45 Of course, but what’s great about it? I like debuffing enemies, but having to shine a torch on them before I shoot them isn’t really that special. I can do that in BF3 :P

What do you mean by possessed mechanics?

If you did make them actual people, then you could use stuff like mace, or flashbangs (in the sense of concussive grenades, rather than lightsources) or you could even light them on fire using the flares (imagine a burning person in a pitch black forest – awesome!). Of course the guns would need to be severely limited, and it would be based around a melee system.

It would also make more sense than taking guns and ammo out of emergency lockers, or off of treestumps.

Then the game would be about dodging them while you burn them down using those tools, instead of simply lining them up, blinding them, and blowing them away.

    #46 3 years ago
  47. Maximum Payne

@46 I meant like random stuff that was possessed like truck, birds…I only finished second chapter :)
To be honest they never said its horror its psychological action game :)
I only don’t like how they always show your enemy where it is.It would much scarier if it was random attack from behind or something.
That is why I shit my pans in Stalker,Amnezia… :)

    #47 3 years ago
  48. DSB

@47 I probably like that least of all.

Trees falling down is really cool, the tornado is really cool, but you know, being chased by a bulldozer really isn’t scary. Or having a fence gate throw itself at you.

I’d much prefer doors slamming shut, weird lights moving outside the windows of a house, or things just generally shaking.

    Or this:

I don’t think you can get around it being a horror game. It’s so obviously an homage to Stephen King. And it’s mostly set at night with axe murderers jumping out behind random objects :P

I just don’t think it’s very good at it. Undying, Condemned, the ghost bit in Vampire the Masquerade, or even the old Friday the 13th. Those were scary games.

    #48 3 years ago
  49. YoungZer0

@42: Ah, now you we’re down to insulting me again, still wondering why a conversation with you is more torture than anything else?

“Obviously if I described combat (which was 80 percent of the game) as poor, that makes the game unplayable, hence I deem it bad.”

Yeah, i know, don’t care, are you that fucking thick, or is it really so hard for you to understand? Are you that fucking arrogant that you think your opinion about the game changes everything about the way i think of the game?

“I don’t mind if someone like you enjoyed it (combat that is)”

    Appearently you do.

“If you don’t ‘care’, why keep on arguing about it with me? Believe it or not, when someone like you makes a comment on the internet, others might discuss the game as a result.”

Arguing? Is that we’re doing here? Because i love to discuss videogames with other people, just not with you. As you seem to lack certain social skills. You’ve proven this time and time again. “I don’t like the combat, so the game sucks.” What kind of discussion do you expect after a comment like this?

The only thing i can say is i don’t agree with you, appearently this doesn’t seem to satisfy you. If you’re looking for a friend; it won’t be me.

    #49 3 years ago
  50. Da Man

What’s the time zone over there. First thing I saw when going to this website is your comment. First bloody thing :o .

Let’s see again, you mention some videogame in comments sections, I ‘m surprised at your description and reference it. You respond with a ‘So?’, instead of elaborating whatsoever, so I point out that if you do reply to people, you should be more articulate about it.

The ‘so it’s shit (obv)’ was sarcastic, don’t see how you still didn’t put all that together.

Suggest rereading my post then, because what I said was how the fact that you can’t run away from anyone makes the game terrible due to combat.

Since aside from fighting and the poor, unimaginative but unrealistic either stages and quick time events ‘investigating’ there was hardly anything else to this game, yes that makes it bad. I’m glad you enjoyed the fighting. But that still doesn’t explain why you think it is appropriate to reply to people with ‘I don’t care’. It brings nothing and has no purpose other than to instigate flaming replies. Which you got. Now what was that about social skills?

Don’t post comments if you don’t want people to say anything about it. I do have social skills, I just happen to talk with people based on my view on them.

To elaborate further, combat was atrocious, it was centered on you, your weapons being slow and clumsy and enemies having lots of Hp. for a game which was practically entirely based on it, going thru the same tedious exercise was unbearable. It was very repetitive.

The crazy junkies as enemies were as scary as a car which is going to hit you when running across the street on a red light. But hey.

Really, how is that every time i read a comment of yours i must first ask myself if a reply is even worth it. Apparently you seem to be the only one who doesn’t seem to understand me.

Let’s make it quick, though i do doubt it will help:

I disagree with you, on the combat, the levels and the enemies. Agree with you on the investigation.

I could go into details, but with people like you, i would only waste time.

  52. Da Man

Rather it’s your aggressive, angsty nature and the lack of subtleness. Not the only one .

I disagree with you, on the combat, the levels and the enemies. Agree with you on the investigation.
That’s what normal people say when they want to point it out. Took you a dozen of posts to figure out.

Your ‘details’ are usually along the lines of ‘Bayonetta is Sarah Palin who farts butterflies’. Please do refrain indeed.

  53. Ireland Michael

    You two are funny.

@51 Considering that both you and DaMan have spent half of this thread bitching back and forth at each other like rival babies in separate strollers, any attempt you’ve made at saving face in your last line is pretty redundant.

  54. YoungZer0

@53: I know. I know. It’s just not the first time Da Man and i had a “conversation” like this and right around the last comment i came to the conclusion that it’s nothing but a waste of time. I have to repeat myself so many time, with no results. It’s frustrating and tedious.
