Rein: Epic “owns” Gears IP, “can do what we want with it”

Epic’s Mark Rein has said that the developer owns the Gears of War IP, and can do with it what it pleases.
Speaking with VG247 at GDC last week, we asked Rein to clarify for some of the more paranoid out there, whether or not Microsoft had some nefarious hand in the developer’s cookie jar.
Turns out, that’s not the case as some mistakenly believe. Epic can, and do choose whatever publisher it wishes for the games it creates.
“We own Gears of War. We can do what we want with it,” Rein told us. “We have a great relationship with Microsoft, and they helped turn the game into a huge success for us, and we are pretty happy with the way things are going”.
This backs up a comment Rein made on our site back in January, when analyst Michael Pachter offered the opinion that Epic “regretted” making the Gears series exclusive to Xbox 360.
Further proof that Epic works with publishers other than Microsoft, is the People Can Fly shooter rumored as Bulletstorm, which is being published by EA.
“I mean we have a game with EA, and while we haven’t announced it yet, and soon we will be able to talk more about it.”
Hopefully, it will be announced at E3, which Rein says will be exciting for the developer.

So it can come to PS3… but won’t!
That said, I wouldn’t mind a double pack of the first two games. Easy money surely.

Of course, Wolfenstein and FEAR 2 aren’t actually Epic games. But don’t let that stop you.

The amount of rubbish BDH writes makes him the perfect person to write for tabloids really.
I love how he says things like PCs have more games per year than Consoles…
Last time I checked, PCs also get a shit load more shovelware.
Flicking through PC gamer, it really is amazing how poorly recieved PC games are to critics. It really does take something special for PC games to get rated above 85% these days.
Just because you have more games, doesn’t mean they’re better.
Quality over Quantity should be the name of the game.
As for Epic?
I couldn’t care less what they do with Gears of War.

Funny how you can never type right, yet you seem to be able to link things fine.
Shows there must be some synapses firing in that head of yours.
Go to your local newsagent and grab a PC magazine of some repute and report back to me with your findings on the scores eh?

Mark Rein would like to believe he owns the IP but hes kidding himself as Microsoft would never ever allow Gears to go to the Ps3. Stupid statement really Mark.

Indeed. The Microsoft/Epic situation isn’t that different from the Activision/Infinity Ward one, and I can see a similar thing popping up there, too, soon. Epic will end up a headless chicken, too. It’s just the way things are going, but they’re bringing it on themselves in this case because after all the time they’ve spent being completely loyal to Microsoft’s console department, this tends to give off airs of Epic wanting to break off.
So what will happen, probably, is that the best epic devs will end up creating small companies of their own and CliffyB will be fairly screwed. I don’t mind that so much, anyway, because I never really liked him. He was too much of a populist.
But yes, there’s just so much wrong with the notion that Epic owns that IP. From where I sit, Microsoft has complete control over their IP.
This is going to be fun to watch!

LOL. you guys are full of it.
and maybe I misread, but where does he say they consider a PS3 Gears game? likely he’s talking about their portable project. they’ve recently joined Khronos (OpenGL) group and demoed their engine on iPhone. I bet this is about iPad/iPhone stuff.

Is that turd Blackdreamhunk still talking BS about how consoles make every game dev on the planet bankrupt?
Consoles didn’t make Activision bankrupt when the console versions of MW2 accounted for 95% of total sales, did they you little troll?
PC gaming is dead, none of the good games go to PC anymore. Anyone who uses the PC as their main gaming platform is either a middle – aged housewife or someone who isn’t smart enough to wake up and realise that most of the good games are only available on consoles.

@ TheWulf , you really need to get your facts checked.
Microsoft is many things, but it’s not an abusive development company like Activision.
As has been stated clearly as day, Epic Games *own* the copyright. They own the rights to the game, to the franchise, to the name, everything.
Microsoft has for a long time had a system in place whereby if you promise (timed) exclusivity for your game on the Xbox 360, Microsoft will help fund the development of the game. This system is almost entirely responsible for any exclusives that appear on the 360, which many will notice are almost all third party titles.
Microsoft has almost no first party development to fall back on, unlike Sony. This is how the two companies are most uniquely different – Sony has the benefit of some extremely good first party development studios under its roof, whilst Microsoft has to fall back almost entirely on third party support.
Ever noticed how a significant number of 360 exclusives are games that were “troubled” titles? Too Human, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction. All games that had extensive and troublesome developments, and now they’re coming together because of Microsoft’s funding… as long as they’re exclusives!
I think Epic are sticking with the 360 simply because the game has become something of an Xbox 360 franchise, in much the same way Jak and Daxter will always be associated with the PlayStation.
As Final Fantasy XIII proved, franchise format loyalty can go a long way sometimes.
Also:
“PC gaming is dead, none of the good games go to PC anymore. ”
This is just as full of bullshit as BDH’s claims that PC gaming rules the world. As a general rule, the games in general tend to appeal to a more niche market, but some of the best selling games of all time are PC titles, and still continue to be.
The PC gaming community is also far more organised, coherent and bigger in scope than the console gaming community could ever hope to be.

If i was Microsoft, i would never give Sony this franchise.
Its because of this game you can build console fanbase. Its addictive and awesome.

“If i was Microsoft, i would never give Sony this franchise.”
→ “Rein: Epic “owns” Gears IP, “can do what we want with it””
Not MS’ call.

Interesting. Clearly Epic understood they were in a good position with regards to 360/MS at the time and negotiated wisely.
Doesn’t mean Gears will be appearing anywhere else soon, but it confirms Epic ain’t stupid and didn’t simply sign stuff away for no good reason or let go of their ip for funding.
I suspect more than one developer who gave away ip rights to what became a big franchise wished they’d taken this route.

Gears won’t go anywhere until its story is complete. Is it a trilogy? If so, I’d say the earliest the PS3 would see a title from the series is a year after the final episode (sort of like GTA episodes), if at all.
