Battlefield: Bad Company 2 mode update hits March 30 – wuh-oh

EA DICE has announced that anyone’s who redeemed their VIP code for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will get a mode update on existing maps in the game on March 30.
What else happens that day? Oh right: “this“.
The two maps in question are Arica Harbour and Laguna Presa, Conquest and Rush maps respectively. The update will allow both modes to be playable on both maps.
The move is part of EA’s Project Ten Dollar deal on cutting down pre-owned games. If you have a copy of the game pre-owned, you’ll have to buy a VIP code from the PS Store, Marketplace and the PC version.
Producer for the title, Karl Magnus Troedsson said the move was “‘mapathy’ without getting nickel-and-dimed”. He did not just go there, girlfriend!
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 went to number one this week in the UK after its release last week, also becoming the fast-selling game this year.

Laguna Presa and Arica Harbour are already in the game as Conquest and Rush maps, respectively. This ‘map pack’ is just converting each map to include the other mode in each one.
Can’t complain, it’s free after all, but I don’t think it can really compare to what IW are doing. When they finally get around to introducing new maps I’m sure DICE and EA will be wanting a few nickels and dimes of their own.

squid give it a break man, this game just got released. and i think we can all agree that making maps for bfbc2 is a much MUCH more complex task than making maps for cod mw2..

@2 I really don’t think you thought that one through. You honestly believe that making balanced, functional, enjoyable maps for abstract thinking human beings is easy under any circumstance?
It might take more time given the scale of Bad Company 2, but it depends on about a thousand factors from the tools you’ve made to the people you’ve hired, so I have no idea how you make that call.
It’s gonna be interesting to see these two slug it out though. I like the way IW build their maps with very specific chokepoints, wellplaced fortifications and flanking opportunities, but at the same time Bad Companys go-anywhere approach isn’t bad either. It’s certainly more fun to prowl through with a sniper rifle.

What two slug what out!?
These two games aren’t even on the same level!
One is one of the best selling video games in history, with a Metacritic top 10 on two different platforms.
One is an ‘also ran’ who NEEDS to leech off of the other game in order to try and give itself some sort of identity.
The MW2 DLC will almost certainly outsell any BC2 DLC, purely because MW2 probably sold more in it’s first day than BC2 will ever end up selling, full stop.

@G1G
I know, man, I was just trying not to troll anyone. But it is gonna be pretty interesting to see how far EA are gonna go to try and grab the headlines though.
BC2 was still better than I expected at least, although sadly it’s starting to wear on me already. The progression system is a chore and the weapons are gnarly. That’s just not the way to beat the CoD.

Sure, BC2 is a good game, and the online is fine, but it’s not to my taste. I personally don’t like the feel of the weapons (recoil animations seem exaggerated), or the lack of a kill cam. Also, I usually rarely go more than about 15-20 seconds without getting a kill in MW2, so I start getting bored when things take longer, like they do in the more slow paced games like this one.
On the other hand, of course, the kind of person who easily gets frustrated by dying over and over again in MW2 is probably going to love the slow pace of BC2, which is fine.
I might pick up a copy one day, but I only played the first Bad Company a handful of times, so I don’t want to end up feeling like I’ve paid £40 for about 3 hours of gameplay again.
As for EA, well, their whole BC2 marketing campaign seems to have been based around MW2, so I don’t see them stopping any time soon.

online is fine Giga? seriously. mw2 online is fine, bfbc2 online is fucking sick. and the only reason bfbc2 will never sell that good is because it’s aimed at a different kind of person. any fucking moron can bunny jump and noobtube in mw2 but to play bfbc2 u need to be much much smarter than that, and most ppl out there r incredibly stupid. i mean look at counter-strike. ppl still play that. and all of them r so fucking retarded. i know that because my brother’s playing it and shit he’s dum as a fucking mule. i swear sometimes i think he was adopted or found or something.

@6, 7
I don’t agree with either distinction really.
Either a gameplay element is fun or it isn’t. MW2 is sharp and precise where BC2 is crazy and chaotic. Both can be fun if they’re done right. I’ve found that my skills from MW2, once I started to recognize the individual recoil patterns and memorize the levels came in very handy in BC2, but as G1G says, the killing is somewhat more sporadic and the progression makes no sense.
MW2 doesn’t limit your unlocks to any one one class, it lets you progress fluently, with nicely paced rewards, and that’s where BC2 gets really dull.
Apart from that, there’s the whole question of how much health you have in BC2 (I get tired of emptying mags into a guy and getting nowhere) versus how hard the weapons are to control, which really needs a rethink. Also, the antiquated server browsing on privatized servers, a lot of which have crazy, restrictive rules, versus CoDs standardized settings and “Play now, whenever” feature is a slam dunk for IW in my oppinion.

Breath of fresh air IMO, enjoying it a lot especially after having been playing COD for so long.
I’m not going to risk being a gunner on a chopper again though unless i know they can fly the fucker.
Also don’t forget to spot anything that’s an enemy (SELECT or BACK button) helps immensely..
Makes me think Medal of honor could be decent, i do hope they improve frostbite a bit though

@4 “The MW2 DLC will almost certainly outsell any BC2 DLC, purely because MW2 probably sold more in it’s first day than BC2 will ever end up selling, full stop.”
That still doesnt change the fact that BFBC2>mw2
