Suda 51: Dead Space 2 is an example of adventurous design

The incomparable Goichi Suda has said he's not the only one pushing the boundaries with new game design, citing Dead Space 2 as an example.

IGN suggested the No More Heroes, Killer 7 and Shadows of the Damned designer was less risk-averse than the majority of designers, but Suda wasn't hearing any of it.

"Really? Well, when I played Dead Space 2 for example, I was kind of surprised!" he countered.

"I thought, 'How could they do this?' I thought there were so many creators who are very adventurous. I think creators who take risks, create really edgy games – they get a lot of respect for that from the players."

The Grasshopper Manufacture head once more invoked punk culture - singling out The Smiths - as a strong influence on his unique work.

"I write the stories myself and I think of design when I write. In that sense, you get the punk style," he said.

"And I always think about making people laugh and providing shock elements to it too."

Suda's next game is Shadows of the Damned, due through EA on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on June 7.
