Steam forums taken offline after possible breach

Valve's temporarily taken the Steam forums offline without specifying any specific reason for doing so.

The following message greets anyone trying to access the forum:

"The Steam Forums are temporarily offline for maintenance. Your patience is appreciated."

Although, Valve hasn't provided any official statement, Steam forum users are reporting that the forums were reportedly hacked late last night.

One of the users contacted Eurogamer informing that a group calling itself FknOwned had altered the text on the forums and started spamming some users' email addresses. Both the forums and the email messages contained the following statement

"Ever wanted to dominate the servers you play on with guaranteed results, but you were too afraid to cheat because of ban risks? Visit [removed domain] It's safe, secure and undetected.

"Along with hacks, we've also got some general discussion sections, hacking tutorials and tools, porn, free giveaways and much more. This site has been conditioned to meet all your needs in terms of resources so be sure to take a look and tell us what you think.

"Thanks again, the fkn0wned team."

It is still unclear if any personal details of Steam users has been compromised, however, it seems like this was only a breach into Valve's forums, which uses a separate forum software called vBulletin.

However, this might cause problems for Steam account holders who might be using the same username and password combination for both their Steam and forum accounts. If you're one of those, this might be a good time to change your password.
