Kingdom Hearts 3 has a release date (thank goodness)

Square Enix finally revealed Kingdom Hearts 3's release date in advance of E3.

When a video game has been in development for five years, it tends to arrive as either a colossal dud or a groundbreaking work of art. So far, Kingdom Hearts 3 looks like it will be the latter. Now we know when we can decide for ourselves, since Square Enix has confirmed it will (finally) launch on January 29, 2019.

The announcement was made in Los Angeles to kickoff the Kingdom Hearts World Tour. It was quickly followed up with more info from director Tetsuya Nomura, including an apology for the delay. "We’ve announced the release day for Kingdom Hearts 3 ahead of E3 at the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra World Tour. I’m sorry that we’re asking for a little more time than initially planned. Please look forward to other information, including a few trailers at E3." (Thanks, IGN.)

Sony first announced Kingdom Hearts 3 way back at E3 2013, but Square Enix has only released spin-offs and remasters in the meantime. For what it's worth, the extra development time will probably pay off, as Alex Donaldson found out during a hands-on preview last month.

Kingdom Hearts 3 will launch for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 29, 2019. The Japanese version will arrive five days earlier on January 25.
