Sullivan: NfS demo pulled to “switch servers to support the main game”

Criterion creative boss Craig Sullivan’s explained the reasoning for removing the Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit demo, saying the exercise was to ensure the studio could provide a suitable “service” to buyers, and that it was necessary to end the test to enable to full game’s online hardware.

NFS: Hot Pursuit demo downloaded 2 million times

EA’s just announced the demo for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was downloaded by more then 2 million people within two weeks.

The Need for Speed series was in trouble a year and a half ago. “They were losing quality, repetitive and EA were beating up the franchise and losing consumer interest in the brand,” says Patrick Söderlund, Senior VP of EA Europe.
Something had to change. Let’s face it, racers are a dime a dozen, especially on this generation of consoles, which has spoiled us for choice with titles such as Forza, Project Gotham Racing and Gran Turismo (well eventually, anyways), to name a few. Söderlund knew this, so when he was asked to come in and rescue the series, he and his team decided to stop the cycle of the same team making game after game each year, and instead have several studios working the series, as he felt this “would make the brand successful again.”
Now, after last year’s Shift from Slightly Mad Studios, if you’re going to continue rescuing a failing franchise, asking the studio that developed Burnout Paradise would seem a good start.

Interview – Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’s Matt Webster

We got a chance this week to see Criterion’s Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit in London this week, and were lucky enough to grab some face-time with senior producer, Matt Webster.
Matt talked about his “healthy paranoia” as regards the competition, why story isn’t “necessary” to the game, what Criterion’s working on next and more.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit – Hands-on in London

It’s hardly surprising EA gave Criterion a crack at the Need for Speed series; Burnout Paradise’s considerable quality is testament to the fact that the UK studio knows how to make an open-world racing game.
The stakes with this series reboot, though, are high. With Need for Speed, by EA’s own admission, having languished in recent years, that Criterion should make the property its own was essential. Has the studio succeeded? We played the game in London this week to find out.
