This is what The Last of Us would look like on PSone

What would The Last of Us look like if it was released on PSOne?

It would look something like this, according to the community on Neogaf, who have mocked up boxart and screenshots of Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic survival horror.

It looks like classic Silent Hill/Resident Evil to me. And that’s something I’d be keen to play.

    Not quite. The PSone era made up for a lack of fidelity with stylistic approaches and a more vibrant use of colours. You can see that in Silent Hill, which was probably the closest to this aesthetically of the time. I mean, it’s close, but the lack of stylistic textures and colour give it a sort of muddiness and indistinctness that the PSone always avoided.

    Another one that might be aesthetically close is Metal Gear Solid, which once again used degrees of vibrant colour as a contrast to make things distinct.

    I’ll illustrate both.

    Silent Hill
    Metal Gear Solid

    So whilst the pictures above do have PSone-ish qualities, they don’t look like PSone games, that grey-brown muddiness is very much something that the 360 era perfected. It was admittedly born with a few rare games on the PS2, such as the visually depressing Medal of Honor, but it was fashioned into a genre aesthetic by the 360. Not even Counterstrike looked that awful.

    So, yeah. Not really PSone. Too grey-brown, too muddy, too indistinct. When you looked down a corridor in a PSone game, if there was a door at the end, the corridor would be another colour to clearly mark it as such, due to the indistinct nature of the machine. You can see that in the first Metal Gear Solid. Edges around walls and floors are more clearly marked, too.

    This actually looks closer to a really bad PS2 game.

    You wish.

    Picture 1 and 3 aren’t at all accurate. Those graphics would only be possible on a PS2. The second one on the hand is quite accurate.

    They’re all possible if it’s a Resident Evil style game with 2D backgrounds.

    These are PS1 and look better:

    @Stardog

    #3 doesn’t look like a RE-style game though.
